Lee was dominiating Gaara throughout the entire fight and was stupid enough to open the gates. If he hadn't opened any gates he could simply have kept on wearing out Gaara's sand armour. Gaara had no way of dealing with Lee.

But I was referring more to the nigh unpierceable bubble shield thing that Rock Lee has no way of breaking unless he had a jutsu that was meant to pierce things... like Dark-Jaxx's mom.
