shino vs shikamaru
personally, i believe that shino is the more superior battle strategist in a one on one fight, and he did manage to defeat a sunagakure ninja (kankouro) when shikamaru needed salvation from one to defeat his sound ninja opponent.
he balances skill and power as well as having techniques that sap chackra as well as strong taijutsu. thats not good for shikamaru's case since shikamaru is a ninja with minimal chackra reserves.
imo, shikamaru can't beat him.

😆 He ran out of chakra and if Asuma didn't come in Shikamaru would have gotten his ass beat to a pulp. Even if he had full chakra, at that point in time, Shikamaru would still probably have lost. He is 1 Genin vs 9 Jonin. Now he can take them all, but back then he couldn't.

But as much as I like Shikamaru..he's fighting somebody who can drain his chakra that seems to drain to fast as it is. Shika isn't going to be able to shadow bind every single bug plus Shino, and be able to do anything. Plus the chakra he uses up trying to get Shino into his shadow. Shino has the advantage of being smart, powerful, and having his attacks move on their own without his need to move. Shikamaru is pretty effectively beaten imo.

They were never stated to be Jounin, they were just stronger than Genin, namely Chuunin and possibly Jounin.

You can't see the shuriken flying towards the sound characters? It doesn't matter if he was out of chakra because they would've been dead if Asuma hadn't stopped the shuriken. It doesn't matter what the dog said in the filler, Shikamaru notes that they're PROBABLY chuunin strength or higher. But all of this is pointless because Asuma was the one who stopped Shikamaru's attack. You don't understand that they would be dead if Asuma hadn't stopped the attack? Can you? Shikamaru even says it. Asuma came later and took him out. The sound ninja's told him to come out, but Asuma came and took them all out. Asuma doesn't even state it was him who stopped it. Where does he state it, nowhere you dipshit. Not in Manga or Anime.

the beetles cast a huge shadow when they swarm, plus they come out from shino, creating a continuous shadow between the two.
but....
-shino knows shikamaru is a shadow nin and he knows all about how his jutsu works (chunin exams)
-a possible counter to this could be to create bug clones to fool shikamaru.
