How utterly stupid he can act. Like Goku at least got dropped on the head as a baby, and was never portrayed as "bright" by any stretch of the imagination.
Vegeta on the other hand probably had the best tutors available, but he's so damn arrogant and prideful, he'll risk not only his life, but the life of his family and his friends just to prove that he's not a weakling against a guy who clearly will push his shit in.

Goku always came to me as young and dumb but a good fighter and Vegeta spitful of Goku cause he still was a better warrior.

It's not stupidity in the least, in fact most people will tell you that Vegeta is a genius when it comes to tactic and overall fighting prowess. The problem is that he is Prideful, Arrogant, and Traditional. That's how most Saiyans are and Vegeta is the prince
I'm the prince of all saiyans!
I.. vegeta... am a Super Saiyan!
Point.
I like Namek saga Vegeta. I think that was his character at his best. Hard to explain. Might elaborate later.
Mainly, it's because Vegeta at this point showcased his genius/rebellion state well. We already saw that he was strong and in some ways smart, but here we got to see how he adapted. He quickly learned a trait that threw most others in the series through a loop (sensing energy), he topped some of Frieza's best men single handed and showcased that new favorite "A Saiyan comes back much stronger" talent. Everything before and after made him look like an absolute push over, while here he can be seen as one of the best.

Read the entirety of my post. I said he acts stupid specifically because of his pride and arrogance drive him to prove himself or showcase his skills instead of taking the most prevalent course of action. I never said he himself was stupid. His personality causes him to make stupid choices. Like allowing Cell to absorb 18 to become Perfect just to prove he's still better for example.
But Goku is the same way. That's a whole of Dragonball Z. They want to defeat them in their true form, everyone. If not, it would become pretty stupid. Vegeta reached past Super Saiyan. He fights Cell. Cell losing.
Cell: Wait! Let me absorb 18 and obtain my true power, I think I could defeat you then.
Vegeta: ... No. *obliterates*
End of Cell Saga.
They would get so much hate mail for something like that because then we would never see the guy at their strongest, we would consider the good guy as always weaker then what could have been. So many bad things could have come from it if Saiyans weren't that way; especially Vegeta.
I get that he has to be that way for the show to work. But it still gets to me. As for Goku, he just wants to fight his hardest and have his opponent do the same. Plus he's not that bright.
Vegeta wants to prove he's better than everyone and humiliate his opponent. There's a big difference between those two.

Why is he bad in GT? Iirc she ran off without his knowledge to join Goku

Why are halfbloods so much ridiculously stronger than normal saiyans, again?
