In the Dangai Ichigo merged with young Zangetsu who had absorbed Hollow Ichigo. So Ichigo didn't have a Hollow side to draw power from.

I remember him learning Mugetsu from them, but not "merging".
It was my assumption that his incredible power was just a result of the intense training he had against Tenza Zangetsu/Hichigo.

I'm not sure its meant to be taken literally. Also, him becoming Zangetsu doesn't automatically mean he "fused" with him.
