its a question of faith, of a belief that there is some higher plain of existence, something to aspire to. look at buddhism, they believe in reincarnation, there whole belief system is based on the assumption that they have more than one lifetime (that and attaining spiritual enlightenment and many others). sure it makes death easier to handle, but i believe its more than that.

lets say you were reincarnated
if you dont know you are reincarnated why does it even matter
if you cant enjoy the second life why believe it
Your essence should be carried over shouldn't it? Their belief is that eventually you'd get into some symbiosis with the universe or something when you become perfect. The "am" will live one even If the "I" won't.

That way they know.JM
I agree, people deserve to know the truth. Which is why I believe people should stop believing religious lies like heaven and hell and just live life for what it's worth.

lies? i'm sorry but how do you know? i don't know if there is anything more, but until we can prove otherwise i don't see anything wrong in believing that the human consciousness can expand and evolve after we die.
Well you can believe whatever you want, but in the end there is nothing to back that up. I can't prove there is no heaven, but I have no reason to believe there is. I'm just confused by the fact that it seem as if the average person does buy into heaven and hell and many other aspects of religion without even questioning it. As far as I'm concerned, it's not "how can you prove there's no afterlife?" it's "what is your reason for believing there is?" I understand people want hope and faith that life isn't it, but just because you want it to be true doesn't mean you can go around telling everybody that it is definitely true.
