That fight is a classic. John Byrne really was good back then.

By getting all their butts kicked like b!tches. Then Reed detected and theorized Gladiator's powers and deduced that since his confidence empowers him; it's also his weakness if they can drop it enough. Reed ask Cap for help.
Reed shows up and Gladiator pounds him with no effect. Reed stands there grinning while Kallark continues his onslaught of and still nothing. Gladiator is in shock and Reed (the real Reed) orders Sue to attack with a invisible force field which knocks Gladiator out. The real Reed steps out of hidding with a projection device on his head. He turns it off and the fake Reed that Kallark was fighting was really Captain America using his unbreakable shield to block and absorb Gladiator's punches and thus shock/weaken his confidence.
Note: This is after an onslaught of punches by Gladiator before his confidence dropped.
