Question Mystery Hardware: Essential or No?

My friend and I were attempting to install RAM into his computer; problem is, all the available slots were filled up. Two of them were definitely RAM, but the other two slots were filled up by some hardware that looks like a RAM stick without all the integrated circuits, chips, and whatnot. We have no idea what effect removing it from the computer will have.

It's just smooth plastic, with only a Dell logo with its serial number.

Does anyone know what this could possibly be?
