The readers are introduced to Exar Kun when he is still an apprentice under the great Jedi Master Vodo-Siosk Baas. He is young and full of curiosity. He uses his Master's holocron to discover secrets of the ancient Sith, who had all but vanished nearly a millennia before; Vodo was not what one would call happy about this, but understands that his apprentice has a yearning for knowledge. Regardless, he calls for Kun to get Crado and Sylvar, his fellow apprentices, for a lightsaber exercise. They are members of a catlike race known as the Cathar.
Shortly thereafter, Kun defeats Crado in a lightsaber training battle. It should be noted that Crado seems to admire Kun greatly. After his defeat, his mate, Sylvar takes on Kun. She is quite aggressive, and somewhat upset over Crado's loss. Kun goads Sylvar, and she looses control of her anger. Rather than use her lightsaber, she claws the right side of his face, leaving the three deep scars he was known to have. He responds with anger of his own, and when she refuses to fight him further, saying "You have fooled Master Vodo, but you don't fool me. You are NO JEDI!", he attacks in rage.

Vodo stops him by hitting his hand with his staff, making Kun drop his saber. He asks Kun whether he believes himself to be better than his teacher, whether anger makes him a greater warrior. Crado throws Kun a lightsaber, and Kun and Vodo begin to fight, Vodo with his staff. Knocked off balance, Kun falls to the ground. Though he seems defeated, he spots the other lightsaber, one which had fallen in his battle with Sylvar. He reaches out with the Force, and takes it in his other hand. Armed with two lightsabers, he is able to drive Vodo back and break his staff! Vodo then says the words which have echoed down the ages:

"Exar Kun, you are the most formidable student I have ever had... but I sense something missing in you. --An empty place hidden even from yourself. A place which remains unseen because no light escapes from that region of your heart."
This was one of the main devices used by the authors to show where Kun's path would lead.
Just a little more than a month later, Kun has left Master Vodo and has found his way to the world of Onderon, once a stronghold of the Sith via a dark power named Freedon Nadd. Nadd's spirit, despite all the attempts of the Jedi towards the contrary, remains on Onderon, and has already succeeded in drawing Satal Keto and his cousin Aleema, members of the royal family of the Empress Teta system, over to the Dark Side.

Kun has come, claiming to be a Jedi archaeologist who must study the Sith artifacts found in the former ruler's possession, artifacts which once belonged to Freedon Nadd. Cay Qel-Droma and Tott Doneeta, students of Master Arca, await. They have been told, by Arca, to tell him as little as possible about the artifacts. They stall him until Arca arrives who tells Kun point-blankly: "You are not welcome on Onderon, Exar Kun." This said, Exar storms off, unable to see Nadd's artifacts. Instead, he heads for the walled city of Iziz.

Once within Iziz, Kun finds himself drawn to a plaza, where two men are preaching the power of Freedon Nadd... and are about to be mobbed! Kun intervenes, saving their lives. In return, they agree to take him to the Dxun moon, where Master Arca had hoped to seal Nadd's spirit within a tomb of Mandalorian Iron. Before reaching the tomb, Kun is attacked by the beasts which inhabit the moon, and neatly cuts them in half.

Upon coming to Nadd's tomb, he finds that the walls are nearly impervious to his lightsaber. As he adjusts its intensity, he feels a sudden chill, and he senses a power that is trying to help him, and is able to break through. He is filled with "profound misgivings" as he looks upon the tombs of the former rulers of Onderon, and on that of Freedon Nadd, but months ago he made his choice, and feels he must move forward to investigate.

Unbeknownst to Kun, Nadd yet lurks here, and confronts Kun; his memorable words are as follows:

"Foolish young Jedi! What kind of madman are you, who dares to violate my final resting place! Your fascination with the Dark-Side things will lead you into grave trouble."
It's obvious that Nadd has some inkling of what the future holds, though Kun is more shocked by the appearance of this spectre than anything else. Seeking to further his own plans, Nadd orders Kun to take his corpse out of his sarcophagus. Kun hesitates for a moment, then lifts Nadd's mummified remains and looks beneath. To his astonishment, he finds two ancient scrolls. He is told that they were written by Nadd's former Master, a Dark Lord; they will lead him to to the last home of the Sith. And he is told, that once there, the awakening will begin.
Kun leaves the tomb, and is confronted by the two men who lead him there. They denounce him as a tomb desecrater, and demand that he hand the scrolls over. Kun not only refuses, but feels "a wave of dark power from behind him... Igniting his anger." He attacks violently slicing his guides in half. Only a few moments later, he realizes what he is done, and is deeply disturbed; not only the fact that he just cut down two people, but also with the ease in which he was touched by and accepted Nadd's dark power.

With relief, Kun boards his ship, wanting to leave behind what he has done. Yet there is also anticipation, as he knows not what secrets await him. Using a translator, he reads the scrolls, which tell of the expulsion and eradication of the Sith, and gives coordinates to their final resting place, the tomb-world of Korriban.

After making his way to Korriban, Exar's fascination moves him forward despite his own misgivings. He passes through a desolate landscape, rocky and foreboding. He moves through an area strewn with bodies, skeletons of humanoids long dead... There is a swirling of Dark Side energies, and the creatures begin to move! Kun defends himself with his lightsaber and fights well... but cannot hold out forever. When what looks to be a landslide begins, he calls out to Nadd, asking why he is being attacked. Nadd explains that they are the Sith's greeting for tomb robbers. He tells Kun to take refuge in the temple, and so Kun enters. After doing so, Kun feels the immense darkness here, and tries to go back to his ship. However, Nadd has other plans, and seals the doorway from whence he came. He then tells Kun that the only way to go now is ahead, to the future.

Going deeper into the Great Temple, Kun comes across a giant crystal. Nadd tells him that it is where the spirits of Jedi Masters who opposed the Sith-- and lost-- are kept. Nadd proceeds to shatter the crystal, and as he does so, brings the walls behind him crashing down on Kun. The force and numbers of the stone shatters much of Kun's skeleton, leaving him weak and dying. Kun asks for help, not being ready for death, and Nadd eagerly takes the opportunity to try and bring him over to the Dark Side, telling Kun that he must surrender to it, that he must accept it. Kun tries instead to call out to Master Vodo.

Light-years away, Vodo hears his apprentice's anguished cries. He attempts to draw the Light around Exar, but is pushed back by Nadd, who actually throws him to the floor of his ship. Nadd, meanwhile, gloats over his prize. He tells Kun that the only person who can help now is himself, that the only way to survive is by giving in to the Dark Side. At first Kun resists, but with his life slipping away, he comes to agree, though he does not open himself to it. Nadd accuses him of lying in his acceptance and keeps pushing on Kun. When Kun finally does accept, he is healed... but not without a price. His screams echo throughout the Force, sounding like a man being eaten alive. Which, in a sense, is true.

After being healed, Kun wonders at how the Dark Side helped him. While Nadd leads him to where the bodies of the Dark Lords are preserved, Kun tries to convince himself that nothing has changed, and that he will never belong to the Dark Side. As they pass through the hall of the Dark Lords, Kun finds that he can now read Sith hieroglyphics, where before he needed a translator. He is introduced to tales of the Sith sorcerer Naga Sadow, who made his way to the fourth moon of Yavin. Even today, Nadd says, Sadow's artifacts and creations retain their power. He tells Kun that Sadow's research must be continued... but that first, the spirits of the Dark Lords demand a test of his commitment.

Nadd removes Kun's lightsaber just as dozens of dog-like predators move in to attack. Not prepared for another "test", Kun runs and falls. With the one of the beast's razor sharp teeth at his neck, Kun tries to call his lightsaber to him with the Force... and finds the Light Side blocked. With no other option, he utters the words "Master Vodo, forgive me. I must live!", and takes his saber with the Darkness. His anger grows and grants him strength, and as the last creature dies, the Dark Lords give their approval; they have accepted him. Kun agrees to go to Yavin Four, but does not see that he has given to the Dark Side at all.

Kun makes his way to Yavin Four. He notes how the temples on Yavin, seen from Starstorm One, are similar in architecture to the tombs of Korriban. Far below, beings of the Massassi race see his ship, and prepare. They are a primitive people, the descendants of Sadow's alchemical experiments on the Massassi warrior caste of the Sith people. Nadd speaks to Kun, telling him that he will need help in the days to come, and that there should be an understanding between them. He warns Kun of the Massassi, and tries to appeal to him by implying that he is worthy of ruling them. Kun effectively tells Nadd to leave him alone. Nadd agrees... for a time.

Once on his own, Kun is attacked by the Massassi, and in a matter of minutes is brought down; his ship is striped shortly thereafter. He was caught in that the Light Side was blocked to him, and he refused to use the Dark. Unconscious, he is taken to the Massassi Temple of Fire. The Temple priest proclaims Kun to be the one they have waited for. Nadd is a little annoyed at these turn of events; he would have preferred it if Kun had just destroyed them outright... but he is patient.

Kun awakes to find himself an "honored guest" at a Massassi blood sacrifice, chained in an upright position.. The Light seems to have forsaken him. It is here where there is a definite change in his perception of self. The following excerpt gives a good feel for this.

"His name is Exar Kun... And he was trained in the ways of the Light. Now he wonders why his powers have abandoned him. For all he can find is a great darkness welling out of the secret places of his heart."
It was Kun's "insatiable curiosity" which had lead him thus far. The Massassi priest holds aloft a talisman, placing it on the broken statue of Naga Sadow. The energy in the temple grows stronger with every second. Within moments, torrential energies are unleashed, and the smell of burnt flesh hangs in the air.
Kun's bonds break, as do those of the Massassi meant to die with him. A creature, one of Sadow's alchemical creations, bursts through an opening in the floor; it is huge, somewhat snakelike in appearance. It grabs Kun and begins to crush him, constricting. Nadd again enters the scene, telling Kun that the only way to survive now is to attack with the Dark power. He talks to convince Kun that he was meant to come here, to become the next Dark Lord. Nadd tells Kun to focus his anger through the amulet, the one the Massassi had used. With his life being squeezed out of him, Kun realizes that he must let go of the past, the pathetic Jedi way... and embrace his true power, the power of rage!

With all the pent up anger towards Nadd, the creature in the process of killing him, and all the other frustrations he has felt, Kun calls the amulet to him.

"Suddenly finding he can speak the Sith tongue, Exar Kun reaches towards the focus of power. --And the Sith amulet soars toward its rightful owner!"
The amulet audibly clamps onto his arm. (please note: amulets of this type are Sith amulets of Ensnarement. Any Lightsider who uses it, for any reason, automatically is turned to the Dark Side.) Kun immediately feels its effect; he feels "his rage multiply a thousand times, then a hundred thousand times." With Nadd pushing him onward, Kun attacks the creatures. The dark rage filling his heart is focused through the amulet. He still thinks in terms of defeating Naga Sadow's evil. The energy discharges of the amulet increase near-constantly; he is unable to control it and can only barely direct it. His hand is burned by this, but he does not feel any pain. Soon, Sadow's horror's are no more...
Kun is left victorious over the beast, but is a little confused. He does not understand the powers of the amulet... he could not control it, and was nearly destroyed by it. Freedon Nadd was most pleased by his student's progress, and got down to business right away. He wanted Kun to continue Sadow's experiments; in short order, he reveals that said experiments were leading towards a way to allow the spirits of the dead to acquire physical forms, which, of course, he wanted.
Tired of Nadd's tests, his guidance, Kun, following an "impulse of anger", turns on him. The power of the amulet was most effective against the old spirit; before surrendering to his second death, Nadd reaches out through the galaxy to his other students, Satal and Aleema Keto. He warns them of Kun's power and ambition, claiming him to be a pretender to the Sith legacy. With his last ounce of strength, he says that the real power of the Sith rests with Satal, Aleema... and Ulic Qel-Droma.

Kun is now the master of the Massassi race; they believe him to be the returned Dark Lord, who will lead them back to greatness. He has ordered temples to be built in accordance to ancient Sith designs, which will focus Dark Side energies to fevered heights. The Massassi enthusiastically follow their new Dark Lord; he is the one of their legends. Some have even taken it upon themselves to build a huge statue of him...

Descending below the floor of the Great Temple, where he had nearly died just a short time before, Kun hopes to unravel the mysteries Naga Sadow left behind. And fully intends to master all the powers of this place. Deep below the temples, he is heartened by what he sees: A ship. Specifically, Sadow's old ship. He realizes that if it still runs, he will not be stranded on this moon. With more investigation, he finds Sadow's old laboratory and equipment... still in tact.
Reading old scrolls, Kun finds a process by which the Sith changed the forms of living creatures. Using the willing Massassi priest as the first test subject, Kun tells him that the transformation is supposed to be painless. His purpose is to create superior warriors, "beasts of war, malformed servants of death", as it were. The process works.

With Sadow's ship at his disposal, Kun decides it is time to deal with the other students of Freedon Nadd, who were warned against him. He travels to the Empress Teta system, finding the place where Aleema and Ulic are in residence (Satal has since been killed). His amulet begins to glow, and he knows that they must have its mate. He thinks of them as a threat to his work, and vows their deaths

Overhead, the Jedi are assaulting the citadel of Cinnagar. Oss Wilum, one of Master Thon's apprentices, looks down and sees Kun amid the falling debris. He wonders as to his identity, and adds the comment "I have a strange feeling... that I am going to know that Jedi... and learn from him..."

Kun himself enters the complex, and confronts Ulic and Aleema. Aleema tries her Sith illusions, but to no avail; she is easily knocked across the room and into unconsciousness by Kun. Ulic fights well with his lightsaber, and neither is able to out maneuver the other.

As they fight, their amulets begin to glow. In moments, the room in which they fought has been replaced by an image of a long forgotten time, during the last days of the Sith Empire. They are stopped by the figure of a Dark Lord, presumably Marka Ragnos, who tells them that they are the chosen, who will "bring about the great destiny foretold." He completes their "initiation" to the Dark Side, and proclaims Exar Kun to be the new Dark Lord:

"Exar Kun, because of you, the Sith will never die... You have rightly earned the title of Dark Lord of the Sith"
Ulic is named as Kun's first and foremost apprentice, and leaves, confident that the Sith will have their revenge!
Both have been marked by the spectre, and now agree that together, they will conquer the galaxy.

Six months later, Exar and Ulic are putting plans into motion. (Note: this will not cover all the events of the Sith War, only those which are of importance to Kun's history). In the opening to Sith War #1, the excerpt dealing with Kun is as follows:

"Through his dabbling in forbidden teachings, Exar Kun has fallen completely under the spell of the ancient Sith ways, and he knows that he must gain additional disciples to fan the flames of his planned victory."
To these ends, he journeys to the Jedi planet Ossus, where he speaks to a group of young Jedi about a "renewal of the Jedi way." He tells them of his fortune in finding ancient Jedi artifacts and abilities, long forgotten, and claims that as a true Jedi he cannot hoard these things to himself. He must share what he has learned. His arguments are persuasive, leaving many thoughtful. He tells them that he succeeded where Arca failed, in the destruction of Freedon Nadd. He shows them his Sith amulet, claiming that it is, in fact, a Jedi amulet. He promises that those who come with him will no doubt help to change the galaxy...
Leaving them to discuss his words, Kun heads towards the Jedi library, seeking a very precious object... a Sith holocron. Master Odan-Urr is showing it to Nomi Sunrider, telling her of its dangers, among other things. After she leaves, Odan-Urr notices the holocron glowing brighter, and remarks on how odd that is. Kun steps into few and corrects him... it is, after all, only responding to its rightful owner.

Urr fights, using the Force to throw Kun back; he arises, and strikes himself. Urr is unable to sustain himself, and fades, becoming one with the Force "leaving the darkest power in the galaxy to walk away with something that will make him even stronger."

The Jedi he had been speaking to earlier enter just after Urr has died, and want to know what happened. Kun tells them that he was old, and it was his time... but that before he died, Urr gave him the precious Jedi Holocron he now holds, and proclaimed him a Jedi Master. He has his students, and assures them that he will never underestimate the power of the Dark Side.

There is some friction between Kun and Ulic, as Ulic has just gained great military strength and wants to attack Coruscant. Kun warns against this, saying they should build slowly and attack together. Kun's attitude towards this attack is best summed up in his parting words:

"Very well, Qel-Droma. Prove your manhood if you must. If you fail, I will go on without you."
Having brought his new apprentices to Yavin, Kun leads them to the temples the Massassi have built. He goes on about how wonderful it is that he can share these forgotten Jedi techniques that have not been seen in centuries. However, some of the Jedi are wary; Oss Wilum says that "there is a wrongness to this place. I think it's the taint of the Dark Side, strong and festering." He moves to go back to the ship, but encounters warrior Massassi. He calls for Kun to call them off, and a short battle ensues. The other apprentices join together to help Oss Wilum, who wonders what they've gotten themselves into.
Kun calls for them all to stop, explaining that the natives don't understand and are just trying to protect him. Oss replies by saying that it only proves the taint of the Dark Side, further accusing Kun of being blind to it.

Kun changes tactics: he agrees with Oss. He claims that he has claimed Yavin for the Light, and needs their help to purify it. Kun asks them to see one important example of his work before deciding what they will do. He holds up the Sith holocron, and tells them it is one of the last shreds of Dark that must be destroyed. He asks them to raise up their hands with the Light, and smashes holocron; not to destroy, buy to release some of the last remnants of Sith trapped within the holocron. Shards of glass fly outward, and the spirits with them, many finding new homes in the assembled Jedi. They see visions of the Sith's past glory, which must come again. They are changed. The residue of the Sith has joined with their own ambitions, leading them into Darkness.

After, Kun speaks to them of the Sith glory to come. Crado, who was not infected, is ordered to stay by Kun's side.

Meanwhile, on Dantooine, Master Vodo considers his options. He feels that he failed Kun as a Jedi Master, and knows that his fallen apprentice is at the heart of the storm about to consume the galaxy. Ulic has since been arrested; his attack on Coruscant has failed, due to Aleema's manipulations. Vodo feels he must do something... somehow make everything right.

On Yavin, Kun's converts are ordered to strike at their former Masters... to level the field for the next generation. Crado asks if he is to kill Vodo, to which Kun replies, "leave Vodo to me." He is to go with Oss Wilum to bring down Thon.

As their ships depart, another lands. It is Mandalore, leader of the mercenary tribes now following Ulic. He has pledged service to Qel-Droma, and seeks Kun's aid in freeing him from the Republic. Kun agrees. They travel to Coruscant.

Once there, Kun makes a grand entrance into Ulic's trial, using a Sith spell to keep most of those assembled frozen, unable to move. Ulic's chains fall to the ground. Sylvar demands to know where Crado is, but Kun brushes her aside easily, though she does kill a few of his Massassi guards.

Kun walks up to the podium, and kills the speaker in a display of power. He takes control of its mind... then lifts him off the ground and unceremoniously drops him.

Vodo has come. He feels he must stop Exar Kun. Kun welcomes his old Master, and offers him a place in the coming Golden Age. Vodo, of course, declines, but does so gently, trying to bring his former apprentice around. Instead, Kun offers to fight Vodo in a rematch of their first battle, where he was defeated. He says that if he looses, he will return with Vodo; if he wins, then Vodo joins him. As they fight, Vodo tries to convince Kun to stop what he's doing and return with him. Kun, in turn, says he found Vodo's teachings lacking.

Vodo, loosing the battle, tells Kun that they will fight again, though not for a very long time, but that he will defeat him! Kun then breaks Vodo's staff, and his old Master goes to the Force. For an instant he recalls what Vodo said to him long ago, about the hidden darkness in his heart. Sylvar, angered, calls him a murderer. His only response, "Stay out of this, Sylvar," is said as he leaves. He knocks her back with the Force and exits.

Back on Yavin, Kun and Ulic are laying their plans. He shows Aleema how to use an ancient Sith weapon, but does not explain the full consequences; it is used to the cores out of stars. Aleema is being sent to use it at Kemplex Nine in the Auril sector, with Crado as her battle commander. As the two get used to their ship, Kun, Ulic and Mandalore talk about their plans... Kun wishes Crado wasn't so eager, for he is loyal, but it will be a minor setback.

The implosion of stars creates a major chain reaction, which obliterates the life within the Sith ship. Aleema knows her treachery has been discovered, but Crado dies confused and hurt. The destruction is felt on Yavin by Kun and Ulic, who ready to travel to Ossus... for it is directly in the path of the stellar wave of destruction. Since they must evacuate Ossus, the two will be able to take what they like.

Arriving on Ossus, Kun is not troubled after sending Crado to his death. He sends his Massassi to gather unguarded Jedi treasures, and moves to collect some himself. He encounters Master Ood, who is hiding some of the first lightsabers ever made. He knows he cannot defeat Kun in a fight, so chooses another alternative. He sends roots into the ground, anchoring himself to Ossus, and surrounding the sabers. He has saved his treasures, but doomed himself, for he will be unable to leave Ossus when the conflagration hits.

Returning to his ship, Kun knows that he now has untold knowledge in his grasp. From out of the busy Jedi gathering all they can for evacuation, Sylvar appears, calling for Kun to face her. She wants his death. When she accuses him of being afraid to face her, he calmly turns away, and says coolly, "I have better things to do with my time." With that, he boards his ship, to return to Yavin and study the spoils of war. He leaves Ulic to fend for himself, confident that he is capable of taking care of himself.

Which is, perhaps, a false belief. Ulic, in rage, fells his brother Cay... and less than a second later falls to the ground, as what he's done hits him. Nomi, seeing this, blinds him to his Jedi powers. Oss speaks to him, telling his that though the pain, the devastation, the guilt, are great, it is their duty to stop Exar Kun. Ulic rises, and tells them he knows where Kun is, and that he will take them there. To Yavin Four.

On Yavin, Kun watches the sky, knowing that he has been betrayed by Ulic, that there isn't much time left. He knows that he cannot fight the might of the combined Jedi forces. Thus, once again, his main concern becomes survival. Reading ancient Sith texts, he has found a way to free his spirit from the confines of his body. Knowing that his life is forfeit should he do nothing, he calls for the Massassi, needing to drain their strength for the process. The surface of Yavin in devastated by a firestorm as the Jedi continue their assault, and all life is destroyed.

Some two years later, Ulic comes to Yavin, needing to see what has happened, if anything has survived. Unable to sense Kun's presence he walks to the temples, then sadly departs. Within them, trapped, Kun knows Ulic's out there. He calls out, desperately, but to no ends.

Apparently, Kun passed the millennia in an uneasy, restless slumber. During the Palpatine's reign, he was partially awakened from his "stupor" by the presence of a young man with great strength in the Force. Searching his temples, he was surprised to find a small band of armed humans, who had taken up residence here. The group left quickly, however, and he fell back into slumber.

Only a few years later, he is brought wide awake by the arrival of a dozen beings alight with Force abilities, and the power he needed to live again. Working carefully, he subdues his eagerness and cautiously probes each new arrival for weaknesses, and growing only a little stronger by feeding off their residual energies.

He is surprised to find the leader of the group to be the same man who had been here years before... but he has grown far more powerful.

Among this group of students, Kun finds an apprentice in Gantoris. He is able to gain power over him in nearly the same way Nadd did over him. He promises power beyond what Luke can offer, secrets and forbidden knowledge. Building off Gantoris's anger, he grows strong and confident enough to attempt to draw Luke to the Sith ways. He appears in a dream, in the form of Luke's father, and tries to guide him towards the Sith teachings. When he mentions taking control of the New Republic, however, Luke realizes that this is not his father, and fights back.

Drained, Kun returns to Gantoris, needing more energy. He goads his apprentice by showing him images of the dying colonists of Eol Sha. Pushed too far, Gantoris turns on Kun with his lightsaber. In response, Kun simply kills him, while growing stronger himself.

When Kyp Durron arrives, Kun stops working on Streen, as he has found the perfect candidate. Over the period of a few weeks, Kun slowly bends Kyp to his will. He grows much stronger, and finds himself able to project his thoughts beyond Yavin. He helps Kyp remove the Suncrusher from the core of the supergiant-Yavin. Luke tries to intervene, but Kyp attacks him. His blasts grow far more powerful when Kun adds his own power.

In Kun's plane of existence, he and Luke finally meet without pretense of anything else. Kun taunts Luke, but is unable to destroy his body due to the efforts of Luke's apprentices. Tionne and the other apprentices know their foe, and through ancient tales learn how to defeat him.

Kun is lured into the great chamber, where Luke's body is resting. He tries to tempt and taunt each Jedi apprentice in turn, but finds them impervious. As they close around him, he grows more desperate, but cannot find any way to escape. As they circle in for the final blow, Vodo appears, fulfilling his vow that he would defeat his fallen student. Streen and Kirana Ti cross their lightsabers in Exar's shade, and he is unable to defend himself. With a scream, he vanishes, "as if exiled from this plane".

And some on Bane.

Bane was a powerful Sith Lord who lived a thousand years before the Battle of Yavin, and was the last of his kind to survive the catastrophic Battle of Ruusan.

He had trained in the ways of the Force under the Sith Lord Qordis, but never completed his formal training. Bane believed he had the right to rule, and had little patience for traditional titles and hierarchies. He had a religious, even messianic view of the Force, a view which stood in stark contrast to the power-oriented creed of the time. In Bane's mind, only he could guide the Sith to their true destiny.

As such Bane often clashed with his colleagues in the Brotherhood of Darkness, particularly the weak-willed Lord Kaan, whom Bane despised, and considered a cruel coward. In retaliation, Kaan poisoned Darth Bane, and left him to die on the field of battle.

But Bane was stronger than Kaan thought, and fought off the effects of the poison long enough to find a cure. He returned to Ruusan to observe the preparations for battle, and mocked his colleagues for thinking like "dirt generals" rather than Sith Lords.

Shocked by Darth Bane's return, Kaan agreed to follow Bane's instructions to defeat the Jedi through the power of the dark side. The Sith joined together in meditation - and Darth Bane unleashed a wave of destruction upon the unsuspecting Jedi.

Sensing the smothering darkness in Bane's heart, however, the other Sith Lords broke the circle, intending to finish off the Jedi with more conventional tactics. Eventually, Kaan, driven mad by the glimpse he had received of the "true" power of the Force, unleashed a thought bomb - and destroyed every single Jedi and Sith on Ruusan.

All except one.

Darth Bane survived the cataclysm, and escaped to Onderon's moon, Dxun, where, after years of studying the Holocron of the ancient Dark Lord Freedon Nadd, he established a set of rules that were dominated by the pretense that there could only be two Sith active in the galaxy at any time: a master and an apprentice. No more would the Sith fight amongst themselves.

Eventually, Bane took his own apprentice, a young girl named Zannah, and set his new order in motion. Future Sith Lords were taught the virtues of patience, planning, and secrecy, and each was to take on the title of Darth, a tradition that had begun with the great Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Revan millennia ago.

Exar wins, here are a few reasons as to why:

Exar was an exceptional duelling master.
He also was able to freeze the entire senate with one spell and then resuce his apprentice and kill an extremely powerful jedi master and nobody could do a thing about it. This jedi master was also very similar to Yoda and been training for 600 years, also remember that the jedi master was training during the height or war in the republic so he knew battle better than Yoda did.
The jedi order also sent thousands of jedi to kill Exar. He was able to repel all of them long enough to preserve his spirit for thousands of years.
And Exar did study alot, Vodo-Baas says that Exar is the most powerful student he has ever trained and the most powerful force user of that time, and Vodo was similar to Yoda, he trained lots of jedi over a long period of time, and if Exar was the best, that means something.
Exar also studied alot, he was fasinated by the sith teachings in Vodo's holocron. Exar also learned under the ancient sith, like Freedon Nadd and Marka Ragnos, he would still be very smart. It is also worth noting that the ancient sith said that Exar would be the one to bring about the golden age of the sith and said that he was the Dark Lord of the Sith, over Ulic-Qel Droma.
Exar Kun was also able to destroy the entire massassani race, quite a feat. He drained their life force and used it to prolong his life.

His apprentice, Ulic, was a powerful jedi and dueller in his own right, but Exar was his unquestioned master and the ancient sith said that Kun would be the dark lord, not Ulic, this means that Kun is stronger than Ulic was.
He was also able to hide as a sith in the middle of the jedi stronghold (Ossus) and recruit jedi to become sith, without the jedi even knowing what he was doing, that's got to take some pretty impreesive power. He decived the best jedi in the order, took sith stuff and recruited new allies from the midst of the jedi ranks, lied to the jedi masters, and they couldn't even tell it was going on! Also, this planet (and its sun) were later blown up by Kun so Bane would have no knowledge of those things that Exar knew.
Also, he invented his own lightsaber, Exar was the person who invented the double blade lightsaber. He also designed his own unique style of duelling, something that he never tought to anyone and was lost after his defeat. So nobody other than him and Ulic had any idea what to expect from him (everyone else he faced ended up dead)
He is also an amazing dueller, after he decided to try against Vodo (a lightsaber master), Vodo died in around 10 seconds, before that Kun was just toying with him. Toying with him! In the middle of the senate chamber on the same planet as the jedi temple, he could still toy with one of the best duellers in the jedi order and win hands down.
Kun also learned loads of stuff from Ossus, which was later destroyed by him so Bane couldn't have learned anything from it, he also used sith holocrons and had the private notes of Naga Sadow, another sith who could blow up a sun. Naga was also a dark lord of the sith from 1000 years before Exar and was Marka Ragnos apprentice and had an amazing grasp of the dark side, Exar learned it all.
Kun was able to walk into the heart of the republic senate, freeze them all, kill their leader and a jedi master, and walk out, nobody could do a thing. This is in the heart of the jedi order! He was also able to kill a beast which is probably very similar to a terentek, or better, with very few problems. Exar was also able to walk into another jedi stronghold (Ossus), kill more jedi, steal the artifacts, and walk out again, unharmed. He was also able to destroy Freedon Nadd with no problems.

About Exar being defeated by 12 people, only 2 which had lightsabers, might I add that one of those people was Luke Skywalker, another was Kun's old master, a 4000 year old jedi master. Also, I think its impressive that it took 12 jedi combined, 2 of which were masters, to defeat Kun's ionized air particles.

think about how he died, he was faced against 10 000 jedi, and the republic fleet. Under those circumstances, anyone would have died. Exar died sure, but he was able to hold the entire fleet off with the force until he was able to figure out a plan to keep himself alive. Exar was able to kill off an entire race, numbering thousands, to keep himself alive, sure he was killed 4000 years later, but it still took 14 jedi, 12 padawans, Luke and Kuns old master to kill him. Think about it, 2 lightsabers, 12 padawans/knights, 2 jedi masters (including one of the most powerful jedi ever; Luke and the old version of Yoda, Vodo-Baas, he trained lots of jedi, for some reason I think of him like an old Yoda), to kill off Kun's 4000 year old ionized air particles! He must have been near godlike when he was alive.

When Kun walked, the ground shook underneath him from the shear power of the dark side eminating from his body.

Exar did invent his own style of lightsaber combat, the double blade, also, his double blade was different than any other double blade. He was able to move it faster and aim more than with other double blades. Also, since Yoda had never seen a double bladed sabre, it would throw him off. Another thing is that Yoda's main advantage is his speed and force power, Exar is at least equal, probably greater in the force category and for speed, he can move his lightsaber so quickly that Bane would be sliced before he knew what was going on.

Exar wore armor with a cortosis weave in it, allowing him to recieve hits from a lightsaber without doing him damage.
