Limits of the force

What are the limits of the force?

I always wondered why force users, especially advanced ones cannot fly.

They can float around if they want, but leaping is faster.

But flying the way Superman does is beyond their ability.

Maybe not like superman, but at least some sort of flying.

There is an ability called force flight which is a branch of telekinesis, and many force wielders have displayed it.

Indeed, Dooku flew in the miniseries,

Anyway, the answer is: whatever the author at the time wants. You can have Darth Vader being capable of little more than choking muggles, or Palpatine being capable of tearing holes in the fabric of space time creating hyperspace wormholes that can kill worlds.

It's not really consistent.

I wish there was more consistency.

Including one of Jerec's minions, Maw, who could literally fly.

Is this in the books, if so which one?

It is assumed that the Cosmic Force have no limits. However, Force-users have a (biological) cap vis-a-vis Force-sensitivity. Still, powerful Force-users can do wonders with advanced understanding of the Force.

Some Force-users managed to defy their biological limitations [through unconventional methods] and can actually compete with some Marvel characters. Examples include Darth Sidious (Legends), Valkorion and Darth Nihilus.

Darth Sidious (Legends) and Valkorion became entities. However, Darth Nihilus was in the middle-ground (I perceive him as an anomaly).

Other then the aforementioned, there are some other super-strong entities in Star Wars who can do crazy stuff.

Some Force-users could traverse space and cover vast distances [in disembodied form]; like move from one planet to another. They are entities (more or less).

Some mastered teleportation and could teleport from one location to another (even from one planet to another) while retaining their corporeal form.

Here.

quote:
A loading ramp jutted off to the right, and a cargo ship hung beyond that. Kyle took two steps forward, felt something "pop," and felt a sudden flood of sensation. Nothing exotic, not by his standards anyway, just the sort of input he normally received via the Force but had been unable to access for the last ten to fifteen minutes. Why? The answer came with terrifying speed. Something, he wasn't sure what, hit his shoulder and sent him sprawling. He rolled onto his back, jumped to his feet, and lit the lightsaber. The air crackled and filled with the odor of ozone. That was the moment when Kyle realized that Rahn had been right - the lower half of his opponent's body was missing!

It was the Force that held him up off the ground. The Dark Jedi's skull was shaved and seemed too small for his body. Hatred filled his eyes and pulled at his thick-lipped mouth. Two equally enormous arms hung from his muscle-bound torso, and one ended in a lightsaber. In addition to holding the Jedi up off the deck, the Force exerted its influence over other objects as well, including nuts, bolts, pebbles, a ration bar, and various bits of wire. All of which orbited the half-man's body as if he were the sun and they were his planets.

-- Dark Forces: Jedi Knight

And then there's this other quote from one of the Dark Forces Saga articles stating Maw perfected Force Flight.
