PIS--Logical Explanations??
okay, so, we always complain on the forum about obvious cases of PIS. i was wondering if anyone wanted to try and take a crack at solving and explaining away some of these cases. one big one that's been talked about recently is red hulk v watcher. pis? sure, though as i said in another thread i actually thought the scene clearly tongue-in-cheek and i found it pretty damn funny.
anyway, it could POSSIBLY be explained away by uatu's vow of non-interference. he certainly wouldn't have been expecting the attack and didn't have a chance to defend. there is also the various low showings by watchers in the past, and their obvious inexperience at dealing with h2h combat.
i'm not looking for a debate here, i'm just wondering if others have a way of explaining away scenes that have been labelled PIS. throw some scenes out there, and let's see if we can eliminate a little of the PIS people scream about. imo, if people continually reach for PIS as an excuse, they've pretty much lost the debate (though not always because sometimes there IS no other explanation -- but let's try and find one anyway. )
so, any scenes anyone wants explained, or does anyone have an explanation for a scene that has been called PIS?
This sounds like a really cool idea but I wouldn't know where or how to start. Could you give us a couple more examples of P.I.S feats and argue why they aren't P.I.S???
Well an attempt at rationalization was that I believe Firelord stated that he could have just vaporized Spidey but he wanted to fight HtH. Of course that doesn't excuse it, but it makes it a little better.
Co-sign. Marvel just ran with the joke long enough that we probably have to consider her legitimately that powerful.
Right. He makes a comment about being able to vaporize the city, but chooses not to. Marvel wasn't saying that Pete > FL.
The only possible PIS beyond that are those who believe heralds should have nigh-lightspeed combat reflexes. I've seen both sides defended credibly, but I believe that travel speed is different than combat speed, and that one doesn't necessarily imply the other. So Spidey jumping around him H2H can be seen as perfectly believable depending on your opinion of that matter.
People have made the comment that "well, he could have just used a building-sized blast" or something similar, but it's the same principle. He didn't want to "cop out" like that, but beat him hand to hand. He also gets leveled by a subway, as well as run through various other damage-inducing occurrences and pummeled for a long time by Spidey. It's dubious that it should've knocked him out, but it's close to being believable.
The Wolverine versus Lobo fight in Marvel versus DC.. heard somebody say something about Lobo making a comment in a later comic about "some bald guy paying him to take a dive in the fight" or something like that.
Though no, the watcher thing still wouldn't make sense what with teleportation and the way the watcher ejected Wolverine from his home on the moon.
it isn't really how long Marvel ran with the joke though. It's the lack of context and the obvious mismatch of powersets that have people calling PIS. It isn't really PIS though. It's humour/tongue-in-cheek writing.

I didn't think the Spider-man vs Firelord thing was that bad. Spidey had spend his entire day looking for a plot device and pecking at Firelord until finally he rocks him enough to knock him out.

In truth it wasnt. I just heard so many people call it an armbar on this forum that i decided to go along. Really i dont know what to call the move where the person takes ur arm and twists it behind ur back. All i know is that police officers do it a lot. No way it shouldve worked on surfer though.

It was a hammerlock, and was blatant PIS for two main reasons. The first is that SS has an extremely durable shell, which is simply beyond BP's level of strength, leverage or otherwise. The second is that SS is at times portrayed as a cosmic essence encapsulated by his shell, which would render that incident illogical.
