DC has nothing but the JL7 and dozens of junior versions of each. Literally. Anything else is a sideline character. How many speedsters? Water version of Aquaman characters? Robins and Bats. Kryptonians? DC is literally 7 characters repeated with minor variations. DC is the one with no originality
The number of unique abilities among mutants alone beats the number of unique abilities in all of DC. How many Lanterns are there? Lantern rogues? Putting aside what emotion drives them, that's no less than two dozen characters with the same base ability: hard light constructs powered by a feeling. There's no variety. Just endless repeats.
Objectively, based on actual numbers, Marvel simply has more unique characters and more separate abilities and focuses on a wider variety of characters.
Batman is at least half of DC sales. One ****ing character. That's insanely stupid and micro focused. But DC fans actually have pretty low standards, so... 🤷🏿♂️
Batman has several titles. Occasionally DC books like Harley Quinn's blows up for a while, but per hard data, the vast majority of times, DC books in the top 25 are are least half Batman solos or stuff like Batman/Superman
I started a thread called “If Cap were pushed as much as Bats”, and we cobbled together this list of books...
CAPTAIN AMERICA
(The ongoing Batman monthly obviously.)
USA COMICS
(Published in the 30s and 40s by Timely, mostly starring Cap. Detective Comics.)
WINTER SOLDIER
(For a Nightwing book.)
CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE PATRIOTS
(For Batman and The Outsiders, w. Falcon as actual leader same as Black Lightning in the current book.)
US AGENT, REAL AMERICAN
US AGENT AND THE REAL AMERICANS
(For Red Hood, Outlaw/Red Hood and The Outlaws.)
AMERICAN DREAM
(An MC2 ongoing for a Batwoman ongoing.)
BUCKY
(A Rikki Barnes ongoing for a Batgirl ongoing.)
PATRIOT
(An Elijah Bradley ongoing for a Tim Drake ongoing)
DAUGHTERS OF LIBERTY
(For Birds of Prey.)
SIN
(For Harley Quinn.)
DIAMONDBACK
(For Catwoman.)
THE CAPTAIN AMERICA CORPS
(For Batman Inc.)
JOSIAH X
(For Batwing.)
CAPTAIN AMERICA BEYOND
(For Batman Beyond. James Rogers from The Next Avengers cartoon movie as the new Captain America, w. Old Man Tony Stark as his mentor.)
NOMAD
(For Azrael.)
THE CAPTAIN AMERICA ADVENTURES
(For The Batman Adventures.)
...which looks pretty F’ing ridiculous, really.
I also agree w. the OP about the lack of variety/w. nearly every major character being derivative of someone on the Big 7.
DC has a huge mid tier gap, characters are either high herald or streets, and the streets are nearly all tied to Batman.
