A small respect thread for Arion, High Mage of Atlantis!
First we’ll start with his depowered era, in which he either has no magical abilities or has to use spells, natural psychic ability or objects of power to act.
A depowered Arion (shorn of his natural magical abilities, using only trickets and spells and knowledge) senses a great disturbance in the universe, then looks years into the future to see what is causing it.
Easily captures the mage masquerading as Arion. This mage was apparently powerful enough that no one noticed that he wasn’t Arion, and helped out during Day of Vengeance.
Unleashed a few Darkness creatures against Zatanna and Superman which cause them immense trouble, and says that he could unleash many more throughout the city if he really wanted to cause damage.
Lots in this one. Battles a Superman who has a protective shield created by the Phantom Stranger, protecting him from magic. Arion makes it clear that his attack SHOULD flay the skin from Superman’s bones, that if he had his full power he could casually remove that shield, transforms New Gods into ancient water demons capable of giving Superman a bit of trouble, transforms himself into a incredibly large and powerful Lovecraftian horror capable of giving Superman serious trouble, threatens to pull Superman’s soul from his body, and then it’s revealed that he’s been keeping the underwater Atlantian city together the entire time as well. And then, once Superman removes his talismans, he teleports back to his own time and reveals that he used disguise spells on the guy from Akron Ohio to make everyone think he had been captured.
Calls down the power of a God, the weaver of the threads of magic and fate that flow through the universe then, once the power has been weaved back into him (it gives him back his connection to the magic, but only for a while) he knocks the god down and threatens to destroy him.
Even without his magic, he still has natural psychic abilities that he can use to mind probe people and devices and even occasionally see into the future.
Arion calls down power from his ‘dead’ father, a being around since the beginning of creation. This leaves him more powerful than he normally is, but still limited in the amount of magic he has. Still, he defeats Garn (who continually has his magic), imprisoning him in powerful magical chains from which he can’t escape.
Again calling upon the power of his father to help him out, he battles Gareth across dimensions, and actually commands the stuff of one dimension, Darkworld (from which all magic originates at this point) to eat him up.
Darkworld houses some of the most powerful magical creatures in existence. It exists as kind of a limbo. Darkworld itself is throwing these beings at Arion, and he casually destroys them.
Arion was Sorceror Supreme, “king of the world” basically the most powerful sorcerer of his time. He has the power to prevent or cause the resurgence of ALL of their type of magic in the entire DCU.
The power of the Dark God Chaon is enough not only to destroy the planet, but to bring about the destruction of the universe (this will become important in a bit). Moreover, he represents the Chaos portion of a cosmic trinity, without the existence of which all of creation would unravel. Here we see that he’s stopped (but not killed, since all of creation would be destroyed) his two counterparts (order and balance), trapped the god of the threads in his own webs (those threads are the fabric of the universe) and pretty much stopped/killed all gods that are benevolent.
Here is what happens when they do touch – planets go spinning out of control, suns nearly go nova, etc. Also, Arion’s father mentions that he’s destroyed entire dimensions. His father is less powerful than he is.
Arion creates a shield for the entire city of Atlantis, energy blasts to intercept some of the blasts coming at him, follows his mystical senses to a place of danger and uses a spell to reveal his enemies.
Arion brings a guy back to life, and then makes it clear that he can keep his soul for as long as he wants, refusing to allow it to go to the afterlife until after he’s said all he wants to know.
Having just recouped his magical abilities, he battles a bunch of Darkworld demons and pretty casually defeats them, impressing his demon friend who had lived there for millennia.
Arion faces off against a being made from the magic of Darkworld. His demon buddy makes it clear that you can’t fight the magic of Darkworld WITH the magic of Darkworld, which SHOULD make his attacks essentially useless. But Arion, as Arion says, no being has ever fought Darkworld with his level of power and he does the impossible – Blasts the creature to smithereens.
Big battle with a creature made from Darkness which threatens to destroy Atlantis, and then with the guy who summoned it as they battle across dimensions.
