The Shade can use his shadow powers for a wide array of effects. Rarely does he ever “let loose” with them, but occasionally, he uses them to a much grander scale then normal. Those are what we will look at first..
Shade casts a shadow matter force-field around an entire city, fully encasing it:
However, this force-field isn’t just a regular shadow. You see, Shade combined his shadow matter with arcane forces. This made the force-field powerful enough to prevent anyone on the outside from piercing it.
-Shade specifically mentions that it can block out the Atom, no matter how small he becomes.
-It can withstand the punches of Superman, or the like.
-Can resist spells from mages such as Dr. Fate and Zatanna.
-And it can also block out underground attacks, from beings such as Animal Man utilizing mole powers:
I’m not going to caption each set of scans, as they pretty much speak for themselves. What I will say is that the Shade normally uses his powers to manifest shadow minions/constructs in order to torture and/or kill his enemies. Some of these creatures even have sentient minds..
Even when Starman stabs the Shade with his cosmic rod, empting that power into him (giggity), Shade is unaffected, citing that even something like that cannot kill him:
The immensely powerful Neron offered Shade incredible power, should he become an ally. Here’s what the Shade had to say..

“Immortality perhaps? I am immortal.”
“And how would you improve my powers? Make my shadows blacker? More shadowy? Be serious”:
When the Source Wall was destroyed during Genesis, most of the heroes lost their powers. Some of them were, Starman, Alan Scott, Superman, Captain Marvel, etc.
The Shade, however, retained his powers..
“Many whose powers are kissed by God have seen their powers die… That’s true.”
“Of course there are those whose powers God wants nothing to do with”:
This is the first time the Shade ever manifested his powers, and he did so to kill a group of people [with extreme prejudice] who were trying to murder him:

The forcefield around opal city was created by Culp inhabiting Shade's body.
Culp is that creepy looking dwarf Shade is stealing the shadows from in the above scans.
I believe the story is Culp and Shade met on the battlefield, WW2 I think, with hostilities towards each other and artillery fire blew them both to smithereens. Shade was the only one to reform from the shadows, Culp took refuge inside Shade. Ever since he took over Shade's body when he was exhausted and forced him to do his more evil or stupid looking acts to ruin his name with Shade not remembering any of it.
I believe the page where Culp is explaining has some pretty humorous pictures of Shade looking like a jackass in a Model-T made of shadows and trying to cut someone with giant shadow scissors.
Anyway, seeing as Shade now has the power Culp had and is as at least equal to Culp in manipulating the darkness, if not better, he could just as likely do it too.
