Jedi relationships?

In AotC we are told that Jedi are not allowed to have romantic relationships and must remain celibate throughout their lives. Why is it then that in the novels, comics etc, there are numerous examples of Jedi being romantically involved with others. I'm not talking about post-RotJ either, I mean back in the days of the Old Republic. Why is Lucas messing with his own continuity?

Indeed. And mostly the comic/EU writers make little or no effort to understand GL's reasoning behind that rule.
