"I can not jump the distance. You'll have to toss me. Don't tell the elf.
Not a word"
Gimli's always around for humor. At the Southern Gate, when Legolas kill the Mumikil, Gimli said it only counts as one, ven though Legolas kill 5 guys on it.
DUDE! go see the 3rd one now! if you can't find it in theaters i will PERSONALY send you a DVD on may 25th...Same day shiping FEDEX!
nobody should miss it...
@gimli&leggy
it was comical...and i think in the book it has something to do with inspiration, motivation and drive...as well as representing their own race at the battle....so does it mean dwarves are beter wariors?
An elf can outshoot a dwarf any day of the week, but not outlast the stubberness of dwarves (Have you learned nothing of the stubberness of dwarves?) Sooner or later, the elf would quit and the dwarf would win by default. Remember, it pays not to quit. (I won alot of Helm's Deep on Bnet by myself as orcs. Don't quit ever!)
argh! I want to reply to this post but..it will take too long and it will be too serious..and I don't think everyone enjoys what I have to say so..nevermind..
meh, their quest to beat each other was quite humerous but as always Aragorn would outbeat them both without knowing it

I don't think this has anything to do with the topic..I'm not sure, but..this is my insight about their body count contest.
1. My opinion of this scene was that Gimli and Legolas were actually trying to create a diversion to the horribleness of what was taking place. They were not, I believe, "killing for sport", yet they were rather trying to "make the best out of a bad situation" by creating a game of it. I think that Tolkien put this scene in at this specific time of the book to lessen the gravity and seriousness of what was occurring, so that the reader would not get overwhelmed.
2. Fighting in a battle like the Battle at Helm's Deep, and constantly slaying Orcs for hours on end would get rather tiring after a while. Once you get bored of doing something, you stop "acting" to the best of your potential. In a battle, you just cannot afford that. One small misstep and you could be dead. It was imperative that Legolas and Gimli had to keep their full attention on "slaying," so, they turned it into a game. It is human nature to want to be the best at anything. If you see someone killing more Orcs than you, then you immediately want to start killing even more Orcs. That is exactly what Legolas and Gimli were doing.
3. Also, they are guys. Guys naturally want to beat other guys at something. So when Legolas is killing more guys than Gimli the testosterone gets flowing and thus starts a contest. It is also a bonding moment for Elves and Dwarves. If Legolas and Gimli weren't friends they probably wouldnt have that contest.
4. Pre-modern warriors actually had quite a thing about counting kills.
Medieval warriors counted how many they killed, and compared; Native Americans scalped people to keep score and prove their braveness; Celts collected heads or helmets. In WW1 and WW2 (and in more recent wars too) fighter pilots and tank crews have chalked up the number of "kills" on their respective machines.
Gimli and Legolas aren't so stupid as to try to "prove they're brave/manly" by killing, but I guess they're just trying to see who can kill the most in a light-hearted competition - since they know they could die in the battle, I suppose this "game" as Legolas called it after, was a way of staving off despair - note that when Legolas hears that Gimli's whereabouts are unknown, and that they hope he made it to the caves, Legolas responds that it's a shame as he wanted to tell Gimli his score!
And finally..If I was at Helm's Deep and the scum of the world was trying to kill me, wouldn't I try and kill as many of the buggers as I could? Sure! And what better way than to have a contest with my friends.

very good...i kinda laughed when legolas was countin up the oliphant..:
17,18,19...ect..you know in ROTK?...
When in a bad situation and you can't escape it...you might as well try to have some fun and what beter way than with your friends?...i mean if i was there...and i didn't have any friends with me...i would be overwhelmed and would be hidin in the caves with the women...or simply give up...
so companions are a must to suport you and help you with all your difficulties...either battles or everyday life...friends help you...at least the best ones do
