Anyone else read this book? I hate to be one of those guys who drops a book in angry fanboy rage because his favorite character just got completely dominated and killed off but it's hard to see Genis as anything more than a plot device in this entire run. I also can't help but see him as totally mistreated in this run.
1. He shows up out of nowhere, totally out of character and back in his old costume by the way, in Issue 1 to join the Tbolts. No explanation given, especially for the latter.
2. Killed by Atlas of all people almost right away.
3. Revives himself (later explained with half assed reasoning), picks a new codename and new costume for an unexplained reason other than the joke of him stealing Monica's names.
4. Has new powers for an unexplained reason. I know he merged with the Nega Bands but why exactly would totally change his powerset? It'd be like Superman going for a sundip and having super strength replaced with matter manipulation. Furthermore his new powers are almost an excuse to get the team out of any situation at any time. This was even highlighted in the Hyperion fight where one team member tells Genis to just BFR Hyperion. At this point it's clear Genis has devolved into a plot device character.
5. Gets sliced to bits by Zemo. Acts selfishly even though he knows he knows he'll destroy the universe.....for an unexplained reason
????
I think I hit all the major points here. A 19 issue run and we have what was a great character under Peter David turned into a plot device/joke of a character only to be killed off by Zemo. Considering Genis dies more than Jean Grey, I wouldn't think it was a big deal but apparently Marvel won't allow the character back while the new Captain Marvel is around. This was mentioned by Nicieza on a messageboard. Of course, with this Tbolts run, Fabian did the poor kid a favor by killing him off.

I wouldn't have been so mad about the death if he went out well. This must almost be what Mungi felt like after reading NA #16. Genis would never beg for his life like that. Hell, he's committed suicide before.
Agreed. And in the solicitations it made it sound like whoever died was going to go out a hero, but Genis went out anything but. It just seemed kind of abrupt and easy when it happened.
So you think Hulkling is his brother too then. Can't wait till the new young avengers comes out.
I think marvel should of just let genis loose in the universe like they did with surfer.
Thats what I think. Especially with the cosmic Annihilation event coming up. He's one of the more recognized cosmic characters they have and besides, does anyone really care about a Super Skrull mini?
Fabian's even said he didn't want the character in his run originally. There was an explanation as to why Genis showed up, he wanted to redeem himself, and thought because of his connections to the planet, Earth was a good place to start. The old costume was probably just an art mess up. His new powers were explained quite adequately as far as comics go.
And we should believe everything Zemo says? No, there's always a way to revive a character. Fabian's said so himself, some writer will see potential in Genis and bring him back. When Bendis killed Hawkeye, Fabian even said that Hawkeye was one of his favorite characters, but it was no big deal, as there were a myriad of ways to bring him back.
I'll be buying it. Super-Skrull's the man.
You should have bought more issues of Captain Marvel, and made your friends do the same, and their friends. It was cancelled because of low sales, twice. Not because it wasn't brilliant.
Well obviously I've underestimated the Super Skrull fans on KMC...
I don't even get what you're saying here. PAD's last run on Captain Marvel sold almost exactly what Thunderbolts is currently selling (20-25k). I don't think thats anything to scoff at for what is essentially a C or maybe even D list character.
