I don't know if anyone's been paying attention to this, but basically a junior officer in the Malian army took over the government because he thought the Malian government wasn't doing enough to fight the northern Tuareg rebels. And in the ensuing chaos the very same rebels who caused the coup have now seized most of the northern half of the country with almost no resistance from the Malian Army.
And meanwhile the African Union and ECOWAS have threatened sanctions unless the coup leader restores the deposed government.
So yeah, one of the most inauspicious coups in history.
