Actually some of the old goth music bands is dance music however its diffrent compared to your modern dance music. Goth metal however is still a controversy amoung older goths and younger ones as well because they do not see it as true goth music. However personally I do not care. The first band to ever break out and was consider to be the pioneers of goth was the Bauhaus.

Before that it was Bela Luglsio's Dead... Back in 78 or so... Its a great song and that song pioneered the gothic sound.
