what makes classic strange so powerful?

What makes him so powerful? After all, he is only human.

Is it the fact that he can call upon greater powers? Can he do this whenever he wishes?

Is Dr.strange powerful when he is confronted without prep? What do his regular items and powers consist of?

Dr. Strange is a bit overrated imo. On average, his as good as they come when it comes to mystical associated beings unless you start delving into the demons, gods, entities etc. The majority of his power comes from the Vishanti which he is allowed access due to his title as Sorcerer Supreme (Not always the case IIRC but whatever). He can call on other various forces due to his allegiances. His also very formidable with magic due to his ability to absorb and contain it (Don't know if that's been forgotten) along with his knowledge of the arts, quick thinking and on hand improvisation.

High Herald to around Trans classically with the ability to go higher when he calls on more power, absorbs external magic, or uses artifacts as seen in his battle with Shuma, Warlock etc.

It should be noted there were times when he had a silly weakness against technology and couldn't affect it. At least not very well. Also, if you damage his hands severely, you remove his ability to cast his more powerful spells.
