£1000 prom for an 11-year old girl

quote:
A mother-of-three has spent £1,000 on her daughter's primary school prom - splashing out on fake tan, fake nails, lashes, a giant princess dress and professional photographer for her 11-year-old child.

Aimee Woolley, 36, from Tipton in the West Midlands, even took on an extra job as a cleaner in order to give her only daughter, Beth, an evening to remember.

To prepare, Beth received two visits from a beautician and stylist and, on the night itself, wore a £200 blue sparkly dress and was ferried about by limousine.

She accessorised her full-skirted, crystal-studded princess dress with tiara, silver clutch, diamante jewellery - and matching azure nail polish.

Mother Aimee says: 'I took on an extra job as a cleaner to make sure I could pay for everything'. And she claims the extra graft was worth every penny to keep her daughter happy.

'Even though I've been up at 5am every day to go to work and we held off from decorating our house this year, it was all worth it to see the smile on Beth's face.'

'I've got two boys who are 16 and 15 and I wanted a girl. I knew when I had her that she would be pampered and she loves it - she's such a girly girl.'

Aimee and Beth began planning for the junior prom back in February - the minute they got the date for the ball.

Aimee said: 'I just wanted to give my daughter the biggest, best prom she could imagine.

'It was really like preparing for a wedding - definitely bigger than any Christmas or birthday we've celebrated.'

In the months leading up to the party, the pair picked out the royal blue netting and satin gown online and then ordered matching shoes and a clutch bag.

Make-up artist Kate Hadley visited their home a month before the prom to trial hair and make-up styles. She then spent six hours - over two visits, the day before the prom and the evening of the big event - getting Aimee ready.

She had a spray tan, fake lashes and acrylic nails painted blue to match her dress in preparation.

And then just hours before she headed out to party with her friends, Kate styled her hair with curlers, and used top quality MAC and Clinique make-up to put the finishing touches to her look.

Beth's aunt and grandparents travelled from Wales to Tipton to take photos and wave her off as she then headed to the house of a classmate where 19 girls enjoyed non-alcholic sparkling drinks from champagne flutes on a red carpet and were snapped by a professional photographer.

The girls then went for a drive in three limousines in white, pink and silver before arriving at a local pub for the party.

In order to pay for the prom package Aimee even took on an extra job as a cleaner to supplement her job as a school dinner lady.

For three months leading up to the prom, she has been starting work at 6am and cleaning a factory for two hours, before returning home to take Beth to school, do the house work, and then heading back out to work at her daughter's school at 11am.

Other mothers chipped in to help with the cost of the limos but Aimee doesn't regret any of the cost.

'I just love my kids so much I'd do anything for them.

'We do struggle with money but I just want to give my kids everything they can.

'My husband was dead against it at the beginning but when he saw Beth come down the stairs he changed his tune.

'He welled up he was so proud and now he can't stop talking about it.'

As over-the-top as it might seem, Beth's story is no way unique.

It seems that proms to mark the end of primary school are the latest pre-teen craze and the hype has been building for a few years.

End-of-primary school proms aren’t just growing in numbers, but also in glitz, glamour and expense.

The BBC aired a documentary called Pre-teen Proms, which told the story of the children at two schools in the three months running up to this latest rite of passage.

The children demanded ‘pamper parties, horse-drawn carriages, limos, Maseratis, red carpets and non-alcoholic cocktails - not to mention prizes for prom king, prom queen and couple most likely to get married.’ And the parents had little choice but to stump up the cash.

Netmums, a discussion forum for mothers, was quick to catch onto the trend, writing on its site: ‘On Netmums over the years we've heard of OTT proms - with parents spending a small fortune on dresses and tuxedos, limousines and even a helicopter to make a grand entrance!

'Beauty salons have seen a surge in children being booked in for tans and make-up sessions to look their best at the prom.'

It is also a hot topic on parenting forum Mumsnet. One user posted: ‘Today [my son] brought home a letter informing us that to celebrate year 6 leaving, they are having a prom. He is horrified, as apparently a lot of the girls are insisting on dates. DS would rather lick his own foot than be seen publicly with a girl, what with him being 11 and all.'

'Tonight the fb discussions have started between parents arranging limos. Limos for 11-year-olds. Surely this is beyond bats*** crackers? Is this insanity normal now? What's wrong with a disco and a handful of Haribo ? Bewildered.’

An equally unimpressed mother called Josephine responded: ‘Total waste of time. "Proms" are one of the worst things to happen to British schools in the last 20 years. They should be banned.’

While Startail added: ‘Leaving six form fine, when you have the figure for suites and long dresses. Any younger no,’ with Mary musing: ‘Good heavens. It will be proms for leaving nursery school next.’

And in fact, Mary could be right: Debenhams has brought out a new range of prom dresses, with sizes starting at age four.
