Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are the Elvis, Micbael Jackson, and Madonna of superheroes.

Within their own respective universe, Superman as an individual is likely the most well known.
As a group, I’d imagine, any large group. Both companies have them. DC has green lanterns, they are basically the police for any adavanced civilization. Marvel has a few empires that are known. Asgardians, Shiar..etc
If we are talking in small scope, IE earth only, then I’d imagine plenty of characters can compete. Spider-Man, Batman, WW, Ironman..etc are all well known in their cities.
In the real world, Marvel is winning. But I also think DC is catching up. Despite the fact that Marvel is making the better movies, DC is making better animated series and TV series. Both companies are in a position to become dominant. If Marvel starts actually investing in TV series, they would probably become as huge as DC TV series. DC on the other hand can still start pumping out good movies.
Krypton Survivor: "Where the helll was the Green Lantern?"
GL's are like Star Wars Jedi. Same basic function as keepers or the peace, almost universal respect where even hardasses like Vril Dox defer to their authority, a corrupting "dark side" opposite lead by a Darth Vader like figure, a group of Emperor Palpatines in the form of The Guardians following a stupid prophecy..

In DCU Superman, Green Lantern Corps, LEGION, and Darkstars are known across galaxies etc. There are also s pool me known villains like Despero (wanted on hundreds of worlds), Starro, and empires/Races.
MU has Thanos, Galactus and his heralds, Kree empire and other races.
SUPERMAN supposedly inpired the heroes/ metas of the 30th Century, despite the fact that records of the era were lost. JSA inspired later generations.
By contrast images of the MU future paint a pretty bleak look on current (every time travelling xmen tail jumps to mind. Asside from that we know Kang knows the Avengers.
I'd say Strange is better known interdimensionally than Any DCU pier. I cant put my finger on why I think it (because as I rattle them off in my head I'm thinking equal Numbers) but for some reason I've got the notion Marvel has more dimensional travellers
Taking All Age Demographics - All World Regions - 3 Years Old to Over 100
IRL DC Has More Recognition
Those Superman Radio Shows The TV Shows The Cartoons in the 1930s 40s 50s before we even got to the 1960s Adam West Batman & Robin TV Show and The Live Action Wonder Woman Series And The Superman Film Franchise with Actors like Richard Pryor The Supergirl Films The 90s Live Action Superman Series Lois and Clark Batman The Animated Series of The 90s (DC had both a Live Action Show and an Animated Superman Show for the kids and young adults of That Decade - Marvel Had no Long Running Live Action Show for kids and young adults for that decade)
Merchandise - People drive and have been driving and constructing custom batmobiles for decades - you'll find them in The U.S. You'll find them in Europe, You'll find them in Africa
Batman has had 2 Film Franchises and The 1960s Live Action TV Show is still in repeats on cable networks accross the world Theres the Lego Film Franchise with Lego Merch Tie In for the kids of this generation.
If you look outside your age level you'll see DC
has more Recognition IRL
In 1979 The Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight
Billions Of Ears Have Heard The Superman Rap
Is there a song which has the same Legendary Status world wide - where they name drop Marvel Characters... (There Isn't).
RL Commercial Revenue
It does look like Marvel are ahead.
But Current Market Activity is not the same thing as Actual Recognition.
Worldwide many people know what a hoover is
its a vacuum cleaner which named a genre
a person may buy a bosch vac and say I bought a hoover
Hoover (I actually had to check to see if they're still in existence - they are) have insane recognition - but their market share is currently not as insanely impressive as their brand recognition.
Well, it appears I misinterpreted the opening post a little, so apologies there. I thought we were identifying the single best examples of either category, rather than comparing companies as a whole.
Company wise, there's a little more parity if we stick to Earth reputations. As we expand outward into the cosmos, DC likely takes the lead, at least as far as heroes. Marvel has cosmically renown characters, but many(most?) of them aren't heroes, which seems to be what the OP wants.

I'm basing this on which characters are know on earth and which are known in the cosmic arena. in marvel for the most part if you are on earth, no one has heard of you in space and vice versa. when people want to get a way they go to space like the FF
