do not go see this movie unless it has either an R or NC-17 rating. if it's any lower, it means they have screwed up the storyline

A top five read for sure, but i'm skeptical as to how well they could portray the book through a movie. The movie better be four hours long to develop all the characters.

Damn right. The brilliant story of Alan Moore is too complicated and too delicate to be told in only 120 minutes. At least two movies should be made. And I wouldn’t mind a trilogy either. If Lord of the Rings can pull it off, Watchmen should be able to also be successful, despite the fact that it’s a much darker story (with NO happy end).

It’s better to wait a while for the other films, than to only have one short movie that sucks. But I guess I’m daydreaming, because only one film will be made. Sigh. Will they ever learn…?

I hope they treat the original Alan Moore story with much more respect than they did with his other two stories : “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and “From Hell”. Having read these original graphic novels, I can very easily say these two flicks were rubbish !!

Let’s hope the “Watchmen” adaptation will be better, but I seriously doubt it.

For those who do not know Alan Moore, one of my all time favorite comic writers : here's a picture of the nice gentleman smile

BTW: if there are other Alan Moore fans reading this, could somebody tell me the identity of V in "V for Vendetta" ? Thanks.

Doubtless he is Guy Fawkes, 16th Century radical who was a villain in the eyes of King James and the Protestant Church.

V. "Villain." Brilliant!

Thanks, but I think otherwise. Not wanting to start an off-topic discussion here, but I’m not so sure Fawkes is the man behind the mask. One of the reasons I think this, is that Fawkes died a couple centuries before the story of "V for Vendetta" takes place…

The "real" V was a man (woman ?) of flesh and blood, not an incarnation or a ghost or a symbol or something like that (but he was cool as hell).

I realize there’s a (vague) resemblance, and I also know that V was inspired by Fawkes. But I’m quite sure he is not V.

Do you mean the identity of the man under the mask - the "man in room five?"

I can say with some conviction *cough* that not only are you not supposed to learn his identity - but that not knowing is in fact something of the point of the story... as Evey herself discovers: Who's under the mask? She is, you are - we all are.

The "certainty" comes from when the V story was being printed in Warrior all those years ago and people were writing in Guessing who V was - "Eveys dad, marvelman, Cream" ..I mean really!

I wrote in ranting that they were all a bunch of idiots and missing the whole point - and got a rather nice letter from old Al' himself thanking me for being a discerning reader and top bloke. More or less.

Is that what you wanted to know?

Sort of. I wanted to know who the man (woman) behind the mask of V was. Don't take this the wrong way, because I appreciate your effort to try to explain it to me, but I always assumed that V was a "real" person.

The only reason I assumed this was because V himself, before turning into the vigilante, was behind bars (room V) and was experimented upon. It's hard to experiment on symbols or an embodiment or so.

But if you say he's not an actual character, that's fine by me, but I really really could have sworn...

But thanks for the info !

But back to topic: Watchmen is cool, and Rohrshach (hope I got his name right) is the coolest of them all.

How can a guy wearing this costume (see picture) not be cool ? wink And he's smart too. And creepy.

Sorry if what i sadi was misleading - V was a "real" person within the story but we never found out anything about who he was before the camp at larkhill.

Reason for that being that he became MORE than the perosn he was and became a symbol. And you can't kill a symbol.

And yeah - watchmen is supercool - Im not sure about a movie tho: Its been kicked around for years - last i heard they were hoping to do it as a 4-5 part Tv series? But they said that about V for a while (chanel 4 had the rights) but these things sometimes come about and sometimes dont.

One every two months or so my buds and I play the "cast the watchmen movie" game.. any ideas ?

"Watchmen is nothing short of awesome, as relevant today as when it was first published. It should certainly be considered a vertebra in the backbone of any comic fan's collection, especially those who like the odd superhero story.

Watchmen is an extraordinary piece of work. It is designed to be read at least twice - there's no way you could get the most out of this in one reading, as so much is built up before we have a chance of noticing it.

On first read, you may find yourself smacked in the face by an awesome ending. Second time through, you'll wonder how you could have missed all those clues."

I "stole" this from a review, and well, I couldn't have said it any better. Whoever wrote this knew what he was talking about.

Something else : I can see Willem Dafoe as Rorschach (goddamn name, I can never type it right).

And maybe Bruce Willis could play the role of the Comedian, why not ? Nite Owl could be Kevin Spacey.

Dafoe would have made a great Rorschach - but since he's now the green goblin he may not fit in another superheros shoes.? People keep mentioning David Caruso for Ror these days, and i'm all in favour.

John Cusack is supposed to be up for (New) Niteowl - I like your thinking with Spacey tho... very much.

(Old) Niteowl I want either William Shantner or Adam (Batman) West.

Ozzymandius: Val Kilmer? Someone detached like that.

Bruce Willis would be great as The Comedian, or Kurt Russel would do just as well.

And Doc M - Mathew Modine.

Hugo Pratt was a legend - maybe his works better known in Europe than in the USA?

Of course I remember his adventures. Not always brilliant, not always great, at times confusing, but Corto Maltese himself always rocks !! That's why I have this Corto Maltese avatar.

He's no superhero, just a cool dude who doesn't judge other people and prefers not to get involved - but he always does. For some reason it's unavoidable. A lonesome adventurer you could say with a laid back attitude.

Look up the word charming in a dictionary, and you'll get a description of Corto Maltese.

There's a statue of him, I'll attach a picture of it.

Well, you really should try to read the 20-year old comics. It's a superb story, with original characters (with real personalities) and an unexpected ending.

Spoiler concerning the end (don't say I didn't warn you) : [SPOILER - highlight to read]: The bad guy gets away with it, a really cool hero gets killed while he was crying and thousands (or more, have to look it up) of innocent people die).
