Also, Cloverfield is an excellent candidate for underrated horror.

Following would qualify for the most underrated film for whatever genre you'd want to place it in.

Oo agree with Anchorman being overrated, everyone told me to watch it and it was one of the best comedys in a long time, didn't see what all the fuss was about quite frankly, and didn't get a lot of laughs out of it...

I didn't know Disturbia was big and hardly anyone I know has seen it... it was just a crap remake of Rear Window.

ACTION:
Over:300(i don't hate it because its stupid. i hate it because its boring AND stupid)
Under: Mr. and Mrs. Smith (i did not think i would like this movie)

ADVENTURE:
Over:Wizard of Oz (visually it stands up well, and it isn't bad, but it's pretty lacking thematically, doesn't have a brain in its head, and is nominally acted. the music is also, i think pretty overrated.)
Under:Beowulf (I was also surprised by how much I liked this movie particularly cause i don't like Zemeckis, but it's actually truer to the source material in terms of sensibilities than most movies)

ANIMATED:
Over:Toy Story (a very good movie, but sometimes i feel it gets overrated because it was the first of its kind. it can't hold a candle to the likes of WALL E, UP, or Ratatouille.)
Under:Mary and Max (have you heard of this movie? didn't think so. and neither had i until a few days ago, but it is kind of astounding visually and emotionally even if its sensibilities don't match my own)

COMEDY:
Over:The Hangover (reeeaaally bad Apatow wannabe with no wit, humor, or creativity)
Under: Some Kind of Wonderful (John Hughes's best film after FB, not that that is saying a whole lot, but it is sweet, witty, and surprisingly ethically sophisticated)
CRIME DRAMA
Over:The Godfather (this is admittedly, a pretty fantastic movie. it just doesn't quite meet the praise everyone gives it. Great, but not one of the greatest
Under:Gone Baby Gone (who knew Affleck had it in him?)
DOCUMENTARY:
Over:like everybody else, pretty much anything Michael Moore has ever done
Under:In the Shadow of the Moon (transcendent film-making on the same level as Man on Wire.)
DRAMA:
Over:The Reader (despite the relatively low amount of praise this film gets, i still think its over-rated. pretentious, exploitive, oscar-baiting, dismissive, and kind of loathsome. i really hate this movie
Under:the Visitor (really corny premise, but executed almost flawlessly with outstanding performances. everything about it feels authentic.
SPORTS:
Over:the sandlot
Under:Hoop Dreams (duh, its a documentary)
THRILLER:
Over:The Usual Suspects (good movie, but self-satisfied and not nearly as clever as it thinks it is.)
Under:Army of Shadows (thoughtful, gripping, and morally complex. well respected by those who have seen it, but too few have.)
HORROR:
Over:The Exorcist (great opening 40 min. then the explicit horror started and the implicit horror evaporated)
Under: Lord of the Flies (excellent adaptation. incredibly intimate while at the same time dealing with universals about the human condition.)
SUPERHERO/ COMIC BOOK
Over:Batman (featuring tim burton's typically obnoxious and empty production design
Under:uh not that many superhero movies are under-rated
WESTERN:
Over: High Noon (wha?? did the movie start? i hadn't noticed.)
Under: Big Country (sweeping epic western with great performances, a little complexity, and one of the greatest (and certainly the most under-rated) musical scores ever written.)
WAR:
Over:Bridge on the River Kwai (there is a lot of interesting stuff in this movie, but really just feels like a dress rehearsal for the real deal (hellloo Lawrence!)
Under:Three Kings (an action/comedy/heist/war/political satire??? a blend of awkward genres never feels awkward itself mainly because behind all that style and action movie cliches, is a beating heart. it's also one of the only major war films since 1998 that didn't rip of Saving Private Ryan.
