I think what you want to ask is "why isn't the media asking the pope all the tough questions I'd like them to ask him so that he'll look bad for talking bad about things I like?"
Admittedly that's a mouthful, so maybe that's why you didn't ask it.

No. They're not "protecting him" by not focusing attention on a months' old quote which, while unfortunate, is entirely consistent with his Catholic worldview in the same way as pushing for greater income equality is.

Yeeeea, I'm with you on that, that's a bad comment.
People do like to brush under that at the end of the day, he's a Roman Catholic Pope and some of the stuff that comes with it, even if I'd take him over any other Pope or Pope candidate.
Do you agree that if Trump had said something like that their would be quote one quote riots in the streets? Im being facetious, but it would be worse them him not defending Obama.

Oh, people would definitely hold it against him more than the Pope*- but " it would be worse them him not defending Obama."? What an odd phrase. Trump's with the Republicans, they get attacked for defending Obama, not not-defending Obama! Though really, transphobia is so common he could almost certainly get away with it, a lot of the Republican party would come to his defense against the backlash.
*For several reasons. One, Trump's in a political campaign with active rivals, being a candidate automatic subjects all statements to increased scrutiny, two, Francis is the head of a very conservative organization and even his softer stance on gay people is a step up, it's not like Benedict was pro-transsexual rights!, three, a president has more control over what actually happens to transsexual people in the US, able to affect the rules that apply to their anti-discrimination laws and such, and three, if people call Trump on something, he doubles-double and loudly repeat his stance to make sure everyone hears it. We'd get a week of it in the newscycle.
