I could be wrong, but I believe it was just the artist given free rein and desperately trying to stop Firelord from sucking.

New designs don't always come with an explanation. Nuke, for example, got bald and fat all of a sudden, even though he is a damn cyborg.

When it comes to comics I do as well for the most part.

It mirrors TV shows where the actor who made a particular character so iconic that it's almost a crime to recast the role, so the character ends up dying along with the actor who made him an household name.
