LONDON, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Up to half a million British teachers, civil servants, and train drivers walked out over pay in the largest coordinated strike action for a decade on Wednesday, with unions threatening more disruption as the government digs its heels in over pay demands.
The mass walkouts across the country shut schools, halted most rail services, and forced the military to be put on standby to help with border checks on a day dubbed "Walkout Wednesday".
According to unions, as many as 300,000 teachers took part, the biggest group involved, as part of wider action by 500,000 people, the highest number since 2011, when civil servants walked out en masse.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the strikes which forced millions of children to miss school.
"I am clear that our children's education is precious and they deserve to be in school today being taught," he said.
Been strikes for 2 months. Good on them. Especially the nurses and paramedics who were promised a reward once we were through the pandemic and have been utterly shat on.
Well, it isn't protesting against reaching kids about mutilating their bodies, but at least it's action.

Will be interesting seeing if any real change happens.
Kind of an acid test on how free the West really is.

Not while this government's in power. And they're just hoping inflation comes down to the point where people will just give up.
But house prices have fallen 4 months in a row. The middle income folks who are mortgaged past their eyeballs with savage increases in their payments while the value of their property drops won't be happy and they're your typical Tory voter. The "I'm alright Jack" group aren't alright anymore. The only chance of action being taken on that front is because so many Tory MPs and Lords also happen to be Landlords with multiple rental properties they may end up losing money on.
an accelerated fall of the Tories. Who are trying to pull a con with the bank of englands help that the fact we are in recession earlier than expected will not mean it will be longer and deeper but shallower and shorter. Insane!
Liberal states do it all the time, it never works in the US. Everyones replaceable, PA's have replaced doctors, adjuncts replace tenured professors, reality TV replaced script writers.

after the second World War, the greatest generation, my father's... he was 18 in 1946, refused to be serfs. The last 75 years have been the richest in the UK trying to put the people back in there place since the creation of the welfare state and Europe Court of human rights. Thatcher was the first Nuke they used to break the unions. But, you can only keep the British divided so long and once we see it is our leaders who are the enemy, our leaders have always been smart enough to concede. From the the magna, to parliament, to abolition of poor laws, to pensions and working condions, to the NHS, they will find we don't take kindly to hard fought for rights being removed when the general populace understand that's what's happening.

See that's the thing, the current crop of leaders aren't from that pragmatic generation. They never learned how to conceed because they enjoyed excesses from their predecessors efforts.
I remember my great grandfather well, he lived with far less in his life, yet demanded nothing of anyone. He did hard work up to 98, when his body finally failed him.
By comparison we are led by toddlers refusing to share their toys.

That PM quote smacks of "Oh please! Won't SOMEONE think of the children!" and "Shut the **** up and get back to work."
There always seems to be money to spend on bloated police and military budgets, and the economy always seems to be doing well enough to give corporations and the wealthy hefty tax breaks...
...yet, as soon as working-class types demand higher wages and/or better conditions and supplies, they'd spell the end of the nation.
