So I have been using this list in to support arguments in threads. But even I have to admit that the list is somewhat flawed. First of all it is outdated. It was made in 1997. Sinse then characters have been upgraded, degraded, awakened from the dead and lost weaknesses.
Not to mention I was questionning some of the placements on the list back in '97. [I had a hard time seeing how hulk could defeat Gladiator, Captain marvel (Shazam), Green Lantern (Kyle rayner), and invisible Woman who were ALL on the runner-up list.] I felt that the Wizard staff had some fanboyism going on.
Secondly, some of the characters were not aloud on the list. Cosmic beings and gods of higher order were not counted. (I understand that, though. Some of these characters have a rediculous amount of power.)
In addition to that, I think they didn't give some characters enough credit. Martian Manhunter? He was on the runner-up because at that time he had that pesky fire weakness. But even with that weakness, I thought he could be higher on the list ABOVE Superman. Currently he isn't as weak to fire as he was in '97. Now I'm damn near positive that he'd be above Superman. Gladiator was on the runner-up list due to his confidence weakness. Although I could argue that the confidence thing is hardly worth mentioning. (He fought Surfer without losing confidence and Surfer is at the top of the list.)
And lastly, they used speedblitzing as a means to end some fights. Sure, in theory, Flash could run in and pound Dr. Strange before Strange could do anything but... couldn't doc strange trap Flash in another dimention? It's possible for strange to win that match.
So here's your chance. You decide who the most powerful comic book heroes are. Lets only make it 5. (Unless you just want to do 10.)

#5: Thor - because he's the Asgardian God of thunder and he is willing to give his life to win.
#4: Superman - because, well, he's superman for god's sake!
~VS Thor: in JLA/ Avengers Supes proved he was tougher, but not by much.
#3: Ben Grimm/ Thing - well, i realize alot of people would disagree with me here, but i think he sould be here. He's fought the Hulk to a standstill on many occasions and has proven to have more "heart" than anyone in any universe.
~VS Thor: just check FF Vol.3 #27
~VS Superman: Superman has been around about 30 years longer than Ben has, but in my opinion Ben has made more sacrifices and has been through more than Superman.
#2: Silver Surfer: has given his life many times to save populated worlds from such villains as Thanos and Galactus.
~VS Thor, Supes, Thing: None of those 3 are even in the same league as SS, nor have they made the amount of sacrifices he has.
#1: Captain Marvel (Shazam!): Just a kid in reality, has already had to give his own life to save others!
~VS Thor, Supes, Thing, SS: Just read the end of Kingdom Come.
if you're placing the most powerful herald and below characters of the heroic persuasion....
Thor/BRB
Mr Majestic
Martian Manhunter
Silver Surfer
Captain Marvel (either)
Superman
GL Hal Jordan
Jean Grey (when phoenixed up)
X Man
Dr Strange
Captain Planet...lol
.... them plus a bunch of others.... no particular order
WHY HE'S #10: While he doesn't exactly fit the hero bill, he is kind of an anti-hero. I think he could take the Hulk personally. He's like hulk with some powerfull weapons.
**************************************************
9. X-Man
WHY HE'S #9: He's one of the most powerful mutants and telepaths.
VS. #10: I'm not sure if Lobo is immune to telepathy, so I believe that X-Man could mind wipe him. (If I'm wrong please let me know.)
**************************************************
8. Doctor Strange
WHY HE'S #8: He is the most powerful sorceror on the Marvel earth.
VS. #10: I'm willing to bet that there are many ways that Strange could defeat Lobo.
VS. #9: X-man is a strong telepath, but magic can get around telepathy.
**************************************************
7. Wonder Woman
WHY SHE'S #7: She's a strong, fast, and durable skilled warrior with a collection of powerfull weapons. I'd like to put her above Supes and Thor on the list, but I just can't.
VS. #10: WW vs Lobo would be a cool fight. I think WW has the speed and skills to take him down. She could deflect any powerful weapon with her bracelets. It would take a while but she'd eventually win.
VS. #9: She could be taken by telepathy but she is based on magic and Greek Mythology and she has a magic lasso. She's more durable than X-man .
VS. #8: WW has fought magical beings before. he could block her with magic for a while but eventually she'll hit him. (I'll post more later)
6. Superman
WHY HE'S #6: Yes, as iconic as Supes is, I see him lower on the list. He's vulnerable to magic and kryptonite which gives him a slight disadvantage. He's the guy to call when something is needed to be done.
VS. #10: Now this has happened before and Lobo gave Supes some trouble but Supes has been able to defeat him.
VS. #9: X-man could give Supes some trouble but in the end Supes is also too fast for him.
VS. #8: Supes would be in trouble here because of the magic, but Supes is too fast for strange. And one super punch and it's over.VS.
#7: I would like to say WW could take Supes, but I can't. Supes is faster and stronger AND can last a long time.
**************************************************
5.Thor
WHY HE'S #5: He's a God. He has a magical hammer and an enchanted belt that doubles his strength.
VS. #10: This would be a cool fight. Thor would be resting after this fight but eventually he would win.
VS. #9: Thor could go in and out of dimensions and Nate wouldn't see him coming.
VS. #8: Thor's hammer deflects and absorbs magic.
VS. #7: I would like to say WW could take Thor, but I can't. Thor is tougher and more experienced.
VS. #6: Thor has the combat experience and The hammer to help him out.

That was going to be the rest of them, but then I realized I left out Captain Marvel (Genis), Quasar, and Dr. Fate. This was tougher to do than I thought. ( I didn't want to put Sentry, Spectre or Pheonix force on my list. But you guys can.)
I should have just stuck with the top 5.

5. iron man:
why because his suit has improved soo much that he can face almost any hero and give them a hard time and his intelligence puts him up to no. 5 because of hulkbuster and thorbuster and if u give him time he will come up with something and beat any super hero
4. superman:
i dont like superman at all because hes mr. perfect but in the top5 he would be in no. 4 he has so many powers to beat any hero and hes known to be the toughest sob.. the reason hes number 4 is that his weakness puts him there of magic...
beats iron man by crushing his armor
3. gladiator:
pretty much the same reason as superman but i like gladiator because he has a mowhawk and he doesnt have a weakness that will really affect him in fighting
beats iron man by crushing his suit
beats superman by during the fight his confidence rises and he gets stronger
2. thor:
god of lightening, he has been in the game longer than most of them and Mjolnir has so much power that i dont see anybody standing against him
beats iron man the mjolnir is too much for him unless he has thorbuster
beats superman superman is weak to magic
beats gladiator facing god of thunder will be too much so his confidence will go down
1. silver surfer:
who can beat the cosmic power of silver surfer his cosmic power is too strong.....
beats all the same way he always do COSMIC POWER
i didnt put the heros with mind crap cause i think thats cheap
dr. strange, martin manhunter, prof x, and so on in the list
and people with speed would be in this list but in a regular
fight they dont show the heros going light speed
flash, wonderwoman, and others....
and the other runner upss.....
phoenix-- u never see phoenix fighting and that gets u to think how strong she really is
lobo--- wont be a match to any of the top 5(ironman beated the hulk so i think he would beat him)
firestorm-- really really hot but if u put him in a fight with iron man i know that iron man will come out standing( im not saying firestorm is weak or anything)
and soo many others--------------------..............
this is my opinion
u guys dont have to agree with me
and i know alot of u guys would think that iron man wont be in the top 5 at all but im also a fanboy of iron man and he is really really strong
4) Thor: the original Avenger along w/ Iron Man and in my opinion still one of the most powerful.
-VS Sentry; Sentry is just a rip-off of Thor.
3) Captain Mar-Vell: another long-time avenger, this guy is also really powerful, and in my opinion can only be described in one word: LEGEND.
-VS Thor; Thor may be an original Avenger, but i think Mar-Vell takes it as THE MOST POWERFUL AVENGER EVER.
2) Silver Surfer: the lackey of Galactus at one time, I believe he has the potential to be #2.
-VS Mar-Vell; Mar-Vell may be the most powerful Avenger ever, but the Surfer was never an Avenger so he cant be here.
1) Genis-Vell: the best EVER hero. Other than the beings like Galactus, etc, i dont think anybody can stand up to Genis.
-VS Everyone else; this guy went toe-to-toe with KING THOR to a standstill! KING THOR! That guy is a high-level Skyfather! 'NUFF SAID!
(7) Herakles: Definatly not the weakest physically of the list but the weakest in overall abilities. Higly durable but a too much ground worker and the fact in comics he doesnt pack the weapons he had in the myths, make it hurt in the overall powerchat list. He is however the most skilled here together with WW and Thor.
(6) Hulk : Why Hulk here and not Herc you say? They always stalemated. Well Hulk has one advantage over ol herc. His powerset in comics allows him to go above any of this guys in this list in strenght. What hurts him? His limited by his rage and doesnt get into that levels often. His healing ability its a nice touch tho and higher than anyone else in this chart.
(5) Wonder Woman : The "weakest" in raw strenght of the list after Silver Surfer ( before he amps himself ). Altho less durable than the rest, she gets above the others due the fact she has better equipment and abilities to play with. Her figthing skills in martial arts are also a great addition and above any of the list.
(4) Superman : Physically strong as the strongest here, its his overall great abilities that makes him goes up in my list. Speed, strenght and a high durability are his greatest assets. What hurts him its the fact hes not that skilled at all compared with some here.
(3) Captain Marvel : And here its the contraversy, with kudos from me. Hes above Superman in my list. A magical being, that never fails to match Superman. The fact he has the advantage toe to toe makes it together with others abilities a killing combo. What hurts its exactly what makes him interesting. The fact hes a teen and naive. Hes the most durable here aside Silver Surfer.
(2) Thor : Psysically powerful to hang out with any of them. Both his hammer and - own inate abilities - makes him one of the most powerful around. Having the most badass and powerful rogues gallery of any of them speaks for itself.
(1) Silver Surfer : Yeah you heard me. While the weakest physically before starting to amp itself, he is without a doubt the most durable, the one with the stronger versability, the fastest, the one with more firepower, more chances to defeat the others. Doesnt mean he cant get beat. But overall hes above any of these beings.

5. Superman. I know he's too good to be true, a boy scout boring softy, but Supes has good powers. I mean, this bloke can use freeze- breath, laser vision, x- ray, he can fly and has super strength! A really strong hero.
4. Batman! i know loads of people will disagree but Bats has the Kryptonitee Ring that Clark gave him and would weaken Clark. Also he worked out all the ways to beat the JLA, as displayed in Tower of Babel.
3. Martian Manhunter. This guy has way better powers than Clark and could read Bruce's mind, foresee his attacks and fly up, using heat vision from distance to beat him! It would be a close run thing with Supes but Manhunter's telepathy would help him win through!
2. Darkseid. As the ruler of Apokalips, this guy could probably annihalate Superman and though Batman has brains, this guy would blast him, or even Superman, to shreds! Same for Manhunter...
1. Green Lantern (Ion, Kyle Rayner). With his godly powers, Kyle is only restricyed from destroying the World wit will power! He could have unlimated power and beat even Darkseid, though it could be a cracker. GL would just blast DS with full, unbeatable ring power!!!

Thanks to Badwolf for the great sig!
Not including cosmic beings. I've rated these characters not just on their pure ability but also their character and what I like about them.
5) Deathlok. A man torn in two ways. He's a peace loving pacifist... but now he's trapped in a powerful Cyborg killing machine that's under his control. Does he keep his values or does he use his new powers to exact revenge...?
4) Captain Marvel. Not my favourite character, but he has a noble and innocent character, coupled with powers comparable to Superman.
3) Flash. For the sheer ludicrousity of his speed. He is meant to be the best at what he does and he is.
2) Green Lantern Hal Jordan. Incredibly versatile and interesting powers combined with a complex character. Very awesome.
1) Superman. Legend. Combination of awesome powers, massive experience and the most kind and noble of characters in addition to his sheer iconic status make him the greatest hero in my book.
