What merit does the idea of alternate dimensions have, do you think? I think that the idea makes sense, but the process of it all doesn't. As it is with many things.
Is an alternate dimension created whenever we make a choice? I mean, like The Road not Taken by Robert Frost. What if he took the other path? Is another world created for that choice?
uh...alternate dimensions and stuff like that always confused me, ive never had anyone ever try to explain it to me and be sucsessful, so um, i have no idea.
I've read a little about the string-theory (and superstring) universe, but understood very little of it. (maths, not my strong point)
Current elegant thinking is that we inhabit a universe defined in 11 dimensional hyperspace - which is more than enough for me - but I do get that in the same way that we have many differing formal systems of mathematics we could equally have many differing universes that correspond to each of these systems.
A more-or-less infinite number.
As to the creation of a new dimension every time we make a choice... I think that (again with the maths) when quantum physicist say that universes are created by actions - they are referring to the actions of supposed "super-intelligent" beings - not necessarily us.
Because in the wondrous land of physics the notion of "soul" holds no sway, therefore we are still animals - and if you dont differentiate then you may as well say when a Fly goes left instead of right on a window it has made a decision and *POW* a new universe is born.
I also heard the theory of there being an infinite amount of alternate universes to compensate for every possible outcome. That means in some universe, I'm dead, a billionare in another, a pornstar in another and a six year old white girl with a tumor in another.

Sorry to destroy the notion of ALTERNATE dimensions. But there's one problem with this idea, that whenever an event has more than one outcome, another alternate reality is created: Where does the ENERGY for this new Universe come from?
There's a difference between the theorised - but unproven - idea of tiny compact extar dimensions, which are required to make string-theory work - and other Universes parallel to ours. IF they existed one of the two would apply: We can interact with these parallel dimensions OR we cannot interact with these parallel dimensions. If the latter holds, there's no need to worry about them or discuss them. We'll never have anything to do with them.
IF an interaction is possible - why don't we see it?

We can't interact with other planets either but that doesn't mean we should just burn our telescopes. Even as a concept the universe next door is interesting enough to merit discussion. Just because an idea make you uncomfortable is no reason to dismiss it - and anyone who wants to talk about it.
Tho I would be interested in hearing you DESTROY the theory some more - since most cutting edge physicists have been unable to do so.
Mr Zero> No, wrong! We can interact with other planets. Light from them hit our eyes, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to see them with – or without – telescope. And we send probes to them (Such as Messenger and Marx Express).
So – interaction is meant in a scientific sense here, not YOU being able to touch thesurface of another planet.
So – there you go: Either we can interact with an alternate Universe (which leaves the question, why don’t we see, say, matter vanish into it or appear from it?), or we can NOT interact with it – in which case we may as well pretend it isn’t there.
So you clearly misinterpret science for being uncomfortable… Your loss.
And what “cutting edge” physicist have been unable to disprove the theory of alternate Universes? You ARE aware that the burden of proof rests on those making the assertion that such Universes do indeed exist. And you ARE aware that I’m not discussing the compact-tiny curled up extra dimensions of String-theory either (again, those who support string theory need to prove it, it’s not my job to disprove it)?

You know when I was a kid I always thought that black holes in space led to other dimensions hahh little kids. Anyway anyone believe there is some type of gateway to other dimensions out there? Or maybe perhaps we visit these other dimensions after we die?
Albert Enstein first came up with the theory of alternate dimensions with the cause and effect clause: Every thought is played out in another universe, thus the universe is expanding; without thought, the universe condenses and closes in on itself. I think that there's a direct corralation between human thought and the universe. With technology doing our thinking for us the universe is strinking, hence creating all these black holes in and around out galaxy sucking in matter and bringing the universe closer together. Our galaxy is being pulled towards another galaxy that has a massive black hole. And with every thought undone, the universe gets smaller. So we need alternative universes to expand the unverise once more.
