^ Further on in the book now it seems the forms he favours are Juyo and Soresu. He's switches between them mid-fight depending on how the fight is going.

That's a pretty lethal combination of defending and attacking imo.

I like Marek in that he was a complete contrast to the Jedi.

The Jedi try to restrict their use of power because they don't want to 'abuse it' whatever that means. So they limit themselves in their use of the force. Even trivial uses, such as Anakin's levitation of the pear in Aotc, which would be the most awesome power to have in real life (telekinesis), is given a 'forbidden' feeling. Anakin states that Obi-WAn 'would be very grumpy' indicating that its frowed upon to even use the force in such simple ways. This could be very frustrating for two things. 1 Every kid who fantasized about being a Jedi for the superpowers would be dissapointed to hear the use of the force was discouraged 2 The Jedi put off using the force when it would completely make sense to in an effort to be subtle (like when Obi-Wan fights GG given that GG doesn't have force powers, Obi-Wan could simply levitate him or push him off the ledge to his death but never does)

But Marek completely blows that idea of the water. Galen routinely uses the force without any restrictions and pushes his force powers to the limit. Vader trains him to constantly push the boundaries of what is possible with the force. So with Galen you can imagine using the force for just about everything without any worries of it being 'forbidden' or what not. Plus, it gives Galen a certain kind of badassness in his lack of subtlely to kill his enemies with the force.

One of my favorite quotes on him in which, I believe, perfectly embodies why I like Marek is the following by Haden Blackman:

"The Apprentice is the photo negative of Luke Skywalker. He's been raised by Darth Vader, and is what Luke would have become if he had joined his father. Vader's not a very nice daddy. This guy has been raised to be a Jedi. When the Jedi use the Force, they respect it and don't overuse it. The bad guys—the Sith—keep testing their limits. Vader discovered this person who had the potential to be the most powerful Force user ever. He's up there with the top tier. He's extremely powerful. Vader has trained him in such a way that he just kept pushing his limitations, seeing how far he could use the Force. So, where a normal Jedi might use the Force to trick his way past a few stormtroopers, the apprentice might use the Force to bring down an adjacent building on top of those stormtroopers. He's extremely confident in everything he does. He's been trained by Vader to be an assassin, an unstoppable force."

^ I loved all the fight scenes in the novel where it describes Marek's insane force abilities.

You know he takes out a Rancor with a blast of Sith Lightning, and take out a pretty indestructible Bull Rancor by blowing him up from the inside!

He also takes down an AT-AT Walker with a combination of Sith Lightning and Force TK in his final fight on the Death Star. The novel was basically showing him getting more powerful with each fight.

I've finished the book now so have ordered the TFUII novel.

You have to admit, jumping into a Rancors mouth so you can explode its head from the inside is badass.
