What did the prophet say about spitting?
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 400:
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar:
Allah’s Apostle saw sputum on the wall of the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off. He faced the people and said, “Whenever any one of you is praying, he should not spit in front of him because in the prayer Allah is in front of him.”
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 401:
Narrated ‘Aisha:
(the mother of faithful believers) Allah’s Apostle saw some nasal secretions, expectoration or sputum on the wall of the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off.
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 402:
Narrated Abd Huraira and Abu Said:
Allah’s Apostle saw some expectoration on the wall of the mosque; he took gravel and scraped it off and said, “If anyone of you wanted to spit he should neither spit in front of him nor on his right but he could spit either on his left or under his left foot.”
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 403:
Narrated Abd Huraira and Abu Sa’id:
Allah’s Apostle saw some expectoration on the wall of the mosque; he took gravel and scraped it off and said, “If anyone of you wanted to spit, he should neither spit in front of him nor on his right but could spit either on his left or under his left foot.”
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 404:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, “None of you should spit in front or on his right but he could spit either on his left or under his foot.”
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 405:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, “A faithful believer while in prayer is speaking in private to his Lord, so he should neither spit in front of him nor to his right side but he could spit either on his left or under his foot.”
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 406:
Narrated Abu Said:
The Prophet saw sputum on (the wall of) the mosque in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off with gravel. Then he forbade Spitting in front or on the right, but allowed it on one’s left or under one’s left foot.
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 407:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, “Spitting in the mosque is a sin and its expiation is to bury it.”
Remember this! Every sin needs expiation if one plans to get it forgiven. Some sins are expiated by repenting to Allah, some by seeking forgiveness from people, and some need an ‘undo’ action. Spitting in a mosque is one of these sins. You need to undo what you’ve done. So scrape it off/bury it.
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 408:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Prophet said, “If anyone of you stands for prayer, he should not spit in front of him because in prayer he is speaking in private to Allah and he should not spit on his right as there is an angel, but he can spit either on his left or under his left foot and bury it (i.e. expectoration).”
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 409:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet saw expectoration (on the wall of the mosque) in the direction of the Qibla and scraped it off with his hand. It seemed that he disliked it and the sign of disgust was apparent from his face. He said, “If anyone of you stands for the prayer, he is speaking in private to his Lord, (or) his Lord is between him and his Qibla, therefore he should not spit towards his Qibla, but he could spit either on his left or under his foot.” Then he took the corner of his sheet and spat in it, folded it and said, “Or do like this.”
What does the prophet have to say about shaking after you pee? What did the prophet decree on behalf of Allah is the appropriate amount of shakes to alleviate oneself of all urinary residue? Is three shakes in compliance with Allah's toiletry hygiene, but four shakes a damnable sin punishable by fire scorpions?
We must know!
Abu Qatada (may Allah be pleased with him) reported it from his father that, 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said that, 'None of you should hold the private parts with the right hand while urinating, or wipe with the right hand in the privy.'
Do not use the right hand for cleansing (Istinja) as it goes against the Sunnah unless you have a problem with your right hand. We use the right hand for eating, drinking, shaking hands, reading the Qur'an etc. we should use the other hand for cleaning, holding shoes, cleaning the nose etc.
'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that, 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went to answer the call of nature, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) bought some water. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, 'What is this'' He replied, 'Water for cleansing (Istinja).' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, 'It has not been made necessary (Wajib) upon me after urinating to cleanse myself with water.''
Many are ignorant of the fact that if you cleanse yourself with tissue paper when you don't have access to water then you are unclean (napaak) and in need of a bath , this is incorrect and an excuse from Shaytan to miss Salaah. Some people when traveling miss their Salaah which is obligatory (Fardh) due to their ignorance. We go out of our way to make preparations and make sure we are financially secure; however, when we have to go on a journey, many do not prepare their journey for Salaah, i.e. a prayer mat, a container for cleansing (Istinja) etc. We should make sure we make preparations for Salaah before making any other preparations.
If impurity gets on your clothes or body and is more in size than a Dirham , then to clean it is compulsory, without cleaning it your Salaah will not count. If the impurity on your clothes or body is the same size as a Dirham, then to clean it is necessary (Wajib) and therefore if Salaah is prayed, you must repeat it as the Salaah is Makrooh-e-Tehrimi and to pray it again is Wajib. If the impurity is less in size than a Dirham, then to clean it is Sunnah and if Salaah is prayed, it will count but is against the Sunnah and to repeat it is better.
No-one should make excuses that I did not clean (Istinja) with water so I need a bath or that I am unclean. Take appropriate cleaning material to the toilet. If you feel uncomfortable if at a service station or at work then at least wet some tissue and cleanse yourself with that other wise by cleansings without water and making sure the impurity is cleaned there is no problem, do not be ashamed of your religion as this is complete and perfect. Most importantly the Salaah should not be missed.
