We can't really compare them to known technology like gunpowder, nukes, or warheads. For all we know, they need reality to create a reaction.
Or, the bleed could have smothered them. Being a catch all miracle substance.

Actually, I never read it and it looks interesting.
I like when somebody actually comes up with ideas that have not already been used to death. It's nice when I can't predict every page.
