Thanos wasn't able to defeat the Champion. It was just the fact that the Champion doesn't know how to fly in outter space. The next time the Champion came back for a fair fight, Thanos had to BFR him.

thanos ared not to beat him senselss. champion is an idiot. drax xrushed him and wasnt even trying. thanos beat him with the power gem. without it thanos would crush him if he wanted to.
