Reason? Orbalisk Armor is a double-edged sword; it has its merits but it is also vulnerable to Force Lightning. Darths Baras and Thanaton are masters of Force Lightning.
Darth Thanaton, in particular, can conjure extremely intense bursts of Force Lightning that a Lightsaber may not be sufficient to contain. Moreover, Darth Thanaton is a master of Sith Sorcery [in general] and has command of Force powers or techniques that may bypass Darth Bane's conventional defenses. Bane's loss to Darth Zannah is indicative of his vulnerability to offensive matters of Sith Scorery.

Bane has a lightsaber to block lightning and force defenses. And his orbalisk armor actually protects him from over a million volts. Yeah, if anyone manages to get through all of that he goes down, but so would anyone else.

Malgus is probably capable of matching or taking advantage Orbalisk Bane's blunt offensive, and his Lightning could probably seriously hurt Orbalisk Bane's. DoE Bane is likely to be less blunt/unrefined, and he's probably just more skilled than Malgus (not by much, though). And he's probably going to actually try to block the Lightning with his saber, as opposed to Orbalisk Bane probably just trying to tank it.
He isn't more skilled at all. His only decisive saber victory was against Sirak/fighting evenly with Kas'im, and Malgus has beaten vastly better duelists than either. Zannah doesn't compare to Malgus either.
