Kavar is one of the Jar'Kai masters of his time, and he can stay calm in combat. Darth Maul's primary advantage in combat has always been his ability to create fear, and it isn't going to work against Kavar. After a tough battle, Maul falls and Kavar continues with his daily life (something Obi-Wan and/or Qui-Gon weren't able to do).
