OK some nicknames you can see where they came from like Katie from Caitlin. . but others. . .I don't see it

Like Bob out of Robert
Or, Dick out of Richard
where did they come up with them?

But one thing I never understood was why "Charley" was short for "Charles"

... they're both seven letters long..
