Canon and Non Canon

Hi Guys In star wars wiki I come across these terms for lore Canon and Non-canon and was wondering if someone could give me the exact meaning both terms.

Does it simply mean see below:

Canon - considered Part of the real Star Wars Universe, Did actually Happen in the star wars universe.

Non-Canon - considered not part real Star Wars Universe, i.e. an paradox events for example stories of what if this happened and mainly fandom stories ?.

I am i in the correct region ?

I always thought non canon means it is the expanded universe stories with various writers. Canon being only related to the original and prequel trilogy.

you could be right. good question though.....

Well, yeah I guess there is. But you can read the "Rules" thread as well. Ushgarak has extensively decried canon.

However, we are in a bit of a transition with Disney at the helm. But originally, under our Lucas rule, only the films, the novelizations of the films and radio plays of the movies were considered canon. The rest is EU.

Hay Guys

I was just in the starwars wiki came across this statement see below

"Infinities is a term referring to Star Wars Legends stories that do not apply to the Legends continuity timeline. These stories were often written as parodies or presented "what-if" circumstances and were therefore officially considered non-canonical within the Legends continuity."

So what do they mean by that statement ? url below

URL http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Infinities

Also to my previous Question on Non-Canon are you saying that Non-canon is can be EU -expanded Universe as well Fandom stories that are not real ?

Hmm....
Interesting. Perhaps have to redefine the lucas rule as someone else is writing/making "episode 7" and using the original cast. Lucas giving away Star Wars means a lot.

I'm just surprised why more people are not talking about it and just accepting a continued Star Wars without argument....

The canon rules have changed- I'll be updating all the threads there etc. over the smmer. There are some discussions in the EU forum that talk about it. But basicially, from now on:

- The films are in the main canon

- All other material produced from now on, unless specified otherwise, is also in the main canon

- All of what has long been called the 'EU' (books, comics, games etc) is now part of a separate canon known as 'Legends'- an alternative continuity, particularly after ROTJ. Other material in the future may well be produced for Legends as well. 'Infinities' is total 'what-if?' stuff that was never considered to be part of any continuity in the first place.

'Canon' just means continuity- those parts you feel do or do not 'count'. It's not a quality judgement of any kind; it's just important to note in a place like this as if you are discussing a character and what he has done, everyone needs to know what continuity is being talked about.

Thank you Ushgarak for you explanation in the Cannon and Non Cannon.

I initially thought that Canon - considered Part of the real Star Wars Universe, actually Happen in the star wars universe.

And Non Canon was a story that was not real and could be fan based

Now guys i may be going over to extremest point here forgive if i am.

Canon - is films, novels and story created under star wars licenses.

so if im understanding this correctly for Non Canon this can be stories created by house hold fans and be considered to be apart of EU, Extremist point warning !! is that also the same if some pervert who creates Non canon porn stories about one of your favourite star wars characters does that come in as EU under Non Canon or does that come up as utter rubbish. Believe me i have seen plenty stories out there created by fans and perverts alike that make my skin crawl.

If thats fact then i'm afraid Star Wars is officially dead to me, because there need to be some form order when stories are created in what's real an utter rubbish and should not be allowed in star wars universe.

Now guys this may be coming over as extreme please forgive me however its something i'm trying figure out.

Don't look at it as a binary canon/non-canon thing. It's all relative- is something canon to that continuity. It's not the case that the films etc are in one giant canon zone and everything else is equal in one even bigger non-canon zone.

In the main continuity, only the films (and likely the novels, especially the original ones), and anything produced from now on, counts as canon.

Legends is a separate continuity. It has its own canon. The films are canon there too, as is all the EU material produced. You don't automatically become part of any other canon just because you are excluded from the main one. If you aren't a. the films, b. part of the old EU or c. produced specifically for Legends from now on, you aren't part of the Legends canon either.

So don't worry- the EU was not, and Legends is not, just a dumping ground for anything that didn't fit the films. It had to be officially produced to fit.

Hi Ushgarak

Again thank you for your insight into Canon rule.

can I ask are basically saying that normal fan cant just simply add stories of there own or worse warp Canon time line with porn stories and comics made up for their own amusement, if thats the case thank god for that.

Anything a fan does is unofficial and so does not fit into any of the official continuities- mainline, Legends, or any such thing.

Lol. Eu blows

On a side note. I will probably only accept ep7 cause of the release of story treatments apparently given to disney by lucas. And because of kasdan of course. And the original three....

In continuing with this topic, I have a small question. When there is a conflict between 2 forms of Canon (such as novels and game cut scenes), which one is leaned on?
