i need for all the characters to have contrived origins. poe and finn are actually half brothers, sons of lando. omg please be true. admiral ackbar is jar jar's son. tarkin is rey's uncle. *twitches* bb-8 was made by boba fett from parts he stole from c-3p0 in bespin. more. i need more. general hux is wedge antilles' grandson. *compulsively scratching self* c'mon baby just another taste. i'll do anything.

Nah, revealing Snoke to be Plagueis would make him a significantly more compelling character than the alternative i.e. Palpatine 2.0.
As it stands Kylo Ren is set to perform the role of principal villain, with Snoke manipulating in the background as a largely archetypal representation of evil and the dark side. This simply doesn't leave much or any room to develop for Snoke a compelling backstory and complex character, just as it didn't with Palpatine.
He can only really be the stereotypical Evil Overlord/foil we've seen and had already, and that will be rather boring, and is unlikely to top Palpatine in it's execution.
Establish Snoke as Plagueis however as he's instantly more compelling and complex, the master of the most powerful Sith in history and former Galactic Emperor gives him a gravitas that Eldritch Abomination from nowhere never could.
And being the murdered, supplanted but resurrected master means he isn't above Palpatine, but not necessarily beneath him either. Also giving us a character wise and powerful but also vulnerable, embittered, twisted, and potentially disillusioned with what it means to be Sith. In this way very distinct from Palpatine, and compelling in his own right, as well as more rounded.
Finally a character that treats Palpatine with condescending disdain rather subservience and reverence could make for some really fresh and interesting dialogue and character in general. His ability to create life and cheat death also has a lot of unexplored potential as a plot point.
I just feel like this idea has a lot of storytelling potential, rather than just amounting to a "contrived reference" (which is really quite fundamental to the PT and Anakin's fall.) And with the Plagueis novel now Legends, it seems unlikely they will leave this Lucas creation untouched forever.

what about snoke as a dark sider completely unrelated to the sith, from an ancient dark side cult unknown to jedi and sith - or a force ghost of such long dead cult
Snoke's not even a Muun. Chances of him being Plageuis is pretty tiny now. And there's absolutely no reason to keep his Origin a secret either, because he's not even well known.
A new name? Who knew who Plagues was then? He was a Sith legend, probably known by Jedi, but hardly outside of that. And since the Jedi were extinct...
