There are many motivations. Personal entertainment, a prank or joke, perhaps they fancy themselves a science fiction writer, or perhaps they are people who feel small and powerless and create worlds around them that are both mystical and that they play a part in.
I went to highschool with a kid who used to say he was from the planet azeries. For years he kept up this weird behaviour that got him picked on and chastised by a tonne of other kids. I always felt sorry for him. I felt even worse when I found out that he came from an abusive household and had created that alternate personality to hide from his real life. I fear that there are many out there like that.

you are free to believe in Klingons, Vulcans, Lizard People and Borg if you wish.......just don't get all offended when other people call it garbage. Even if you choose to ignore what you were taught about what is sane and insane, realize that the rest of the world views believing fictional characters created by science fiction writers to be real is viewed as insane. If you want to watch "V" and think the characters are real, fine. If you want to watch Star Trek and believe the characters to be real, fine. Hell.......if you want to watch A Bugs Life and believe the characters to be real, that's okay too. Just don't get all offended because others don't.
