From what I can remember from my youth, before the WWW was something called billboard sites. My friend had one, but there wasn't many of them and they were very poor compared to today's sites.
But I'm the last person who should answer a techy question, I barely know enough to get by. The giant head we call "Raz" will know.
the internet was not how we know it as today,
during the cold war, the decision was made that the important files of the (US)government would have to be safe from the Russians (obviously), in order to do that, the staff thought it was wiser that instead of using one big supercomputer which contained all the stuff, they had all these "normal" computers connecting and sharing stuff, so that if one failed the others could pick it up and continue to protect and serve the country *patriotic grin*
now, the first "page" was nothing more than somesort of army-thingie.
Later, after the cold war, universities and such joined this antranet (at least that was the name I think) and it got to be the home of hackers immediatly. Then, after a few tests and such and making it easier for people to use that cyberspace, people in Genève, made the things we know now as HTTP, HTML, ISP etc. (more precisely, a Swiss and a Belgian), after those developements, people started commercialising the net (now named internet) to let private users on
but the exact year, I can not tell you
It's amazing how fastn the internet spread. I know of a time w/o the internet and a time w/ it, but no transition time. It just came out of no where. Kind of like the DVD revolution they popped out of no where and are now everywhere.
the internet and the world wide web are two different things, the internet coming first as yerss said...
the world wide web was born at a particle physics/nuclear research centre just outside of geneva, called CERN. i visited it a couple of years back, its home to the worlds largest particle accelerator. anyways, WWW was born so that scientists around the globe could share their data and findings with ease. so i guess the first site ever was the CERN site. hope that answers ur question
