Here in the midst of the "War of the Consoles", Nintendo's new creation, called "Revolution", will have what the company calls a secret weapon: super backward compatability. The ability to download online, for a fee, any game from Nintendo's entire video game library from the past 20 years ranging from the original 8-bit NES, the 16-bit SNES, and the N64. There is speculation as to whether or not we will have access to the Gamecube's library, some say it is too soon for that because Nintendo is still making money from the Cube. My question, though, is this: How much money should Nintendo charge us for downloadable games? Some people say that they ought to be free to the public, but I say Nintendo would have to be braindead not to want to make money. While the company has every right to a profit, I don't want to be raped of all my money for old-school games. In my opinion the game prices should be according to the "age", if you will. Like the NES games should be .99 cents, the SNES games maybe $1.50, and N64 games around $2.00. That sounds about reasonable to me. Plus there would be MANY, MANY people buying these games online so Nintendo would prifit immensly. Does anyone agree?
I haven't heard anything about a fee until now. I am trying to find the video clip from E3 and the article about Revolutions I once read at GameSpot.com but that site has a crappy search engine, cant find it.
As much as I would like to believe it, I think those prices are a bit too low. I agree with them being cheaper wth age, but I also think that the games themselves will be priced individually, depending on their popularity.
For example, the original Super Mario Bros. is going to be more expensive than other games, simply because it will be downloaded more. Other games (Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time) will most likely also be more money, compared to other downloads.
I had pondered that, myself. I, too, think certain games, no matter what console or year they are from, will be more costly than other simply because of popularity or rarity.
Many games will be free for download, some will cost a few bucks for download. Not a big deal if you ask me. Seeing as many of the old super nintendo games that are rare go for over 40 bucks right now...it's quite a deal.
Also, keep in mind the system itself will be 200 dollars cheaper then the PS3 and the 360, not to mention many super nintendo N64 games that are going to cost 2 bucks to download are vastly supperior to the majority of the new graphically reliant games that will be coming out for the other systems at 70 bucks a pop.
The downloadable old games is the sole reason why I'll be getting a Revolution first before any of the other systems, I think it's another brilliant idea from Nintendo.
I agree that it's a brilliant idea. If they let anyone just download for free, that a lot of money going to shit. Not to mention that gamers all over the world are crying out for old school nostalgia. I've seen NES and SNES games priced at over $30 in stores! It's ironic isn't it? I don't think, however, the prices of games should be based on their rarity or popularity, instead on their age. I don't plan at all to buy a 360, but the Revolution is a must-buy, and I have yet to see all the info and specs for PS3, but I'll probably end up buying that, too.
ESB, did you know FFI and FFII are on the GBA as one cartridge and FFIII is coming out on the NDS? So you could play all those games on the DS.
It would be good if Nintendo released these games in their original incarnations instead of bastardising them. When I play a classic game from my childhood I don't want it to have changed. It isn't worth it to me though anyway, because I own all seven of Nintendo's Zelda games and I've played all the Super Mario games to death. Judging by their GameCube games Nintendo have become sellouts who don't produce anything original anymore. Nintendo need to stop relying so heavily on re-releases and remakes and spend more time on their newer games instead of rushing them.

I know, it's the same for Australia. It's bloody confusing.

I've only played VII, VIII and IX. Didn't you yanks get a Final Fantasy anthology on the Playstation that had all the old ones though ?

Gender: Male Location: Chaos.
There can only be CHAOS!
The Anthology only had V and VI. There was one that had I & II but major changes were made to their port for GBA. III is coming out for the first time in the US (not the VI III, the real III III.)
Anyway, back on topic: I will be getting a Revolution as my first next-gen system most likely, not only due to the vast difference in price, but what it can do already, with such little information being out about it. The ability to download the entire library of Nintendo games is definately something that neither Sony nor Microsoft can provide for obvious reasons, and at such an affordable price, you can't go wrong with those games. I had a Sega Game Gear growing up, then moved on to PS1 and PS2, and only recently got a Gamecube. This would be fantastic since I don't have any experience with the NES and not as much with the SNES (got one at a yard sale but don't have many games). Personally I can't wait to get my hands on a Revolution, as Backfire pointed out, I also think it's another brilliant idea from Nintendo.
