I've always felt the first appearance of Galactus in FF 48-50 ranks as - if not the best - certainly among the best comic-book / scifi stories ever. It may seem quaint, because DC and Marvel have so many gimme-a-blinkin'-break-level characters and stories now (thanks to one-upmanship, IMO), but at the time, the idea of a planet-devouring entity come to Earth, and what his herald (still the most unique character in comicdom) learns to save us...great story-telling. Vast in scope, simple in message.
One day hopefully, in my lifetime, this story will be made into a movie.

Would this count? Though not from a comic per se, it is from the episode "Apokolips...Now!: Part 2" of the Superman animated series. There is a character, with bushy eyebrows and a cigar, named Dan Turpin: essentially Jack Kirby's alter ego in this arena. It is through his actions that Superman is able to free himself from Darkseid's hold and save the day. In the course of the final battle, the Jack Kirby character is killed.
It may be the final scene, where Superman is standing over Turpin's grave. He says...
"Good-bye, old friend. In the end, the world didn't really need a superman. Just a brave one."
I believe this episode was dedicated to Kirby, who had recently passed away.
