Hitting Your Drive Straight - for golf lovers
Three keys to being able to get the accuracy you desire with the driver.
Key #1 – Keeping your swing on plane is very important to driving accuracy. If your swing is too steep, or on an "outside in" path, the results of your shots will be pop ups or pull slices. Shallowing out the swing plane combined with a better understanding of face control will help to produce straighter shots. A good way to practice a good swing plane is to make some practice swings as if the ball was waist high. Because the golf swing is a circle tilted over, you should be able to transfer the swing you make when the ball is waist high to the swing you make when the ball is on the ground.
Key #2 – The rhythm of your swing is the second key to longer and more accurate drives. The desire to hit long and straight shots often results in a quick movement from the top in the golf swing. You can counteract this movement by developing internal counting during your swing. Counting “one thousand one” and the backswing and “one thousand two” on the downswing will help to create a smooth rhythm.
One drill that you can use to help develop a good rhythm in your golf swing is one that Davis Love III used when he was younger. He had the ability to hit the ball long, but lacked consistency. His father taught him to work on hitting 125-150 yard shots while hitting a driver with a full swing. He would then progress to 175, 200, 250 and finally 300 yards. Using this drill will help to develop a tremendous sense of rhythm.
Key #3 – Controlling the club face is paramount to you being an accurate driver of the ball. There are two things to check when dealing with club face control. First, you need to check your grip. Second, you need to see if you have the ability to hit a ball to the left and to the right. If you can do both of those, you should be able to split the difference and hit the ball straight.
