Warning The Boys #34 and German Law...

quote:
Of Swastikas and Supermen - The Boys #34 Cover Story.

At WizardWorld: Philadelphia, Dynamite Entertainment stated that, due to the swastika appearing on the cover of The Boys #34 by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the comic would not be able to be sold in Germany, due to law prohibiting display of the symbol that was used by the Nazis in World War II.

The mention stirred up discussion among some fans of the German law, and in the eyes of some, Dynamite cutting off a segment of the global marketplace.

We spoke with Robertson and Dynamite President and Publisher nick Barrucci about the cover and the constraint.

Article

I don't collect, "The Boys," this is more about why Germany has a crazy law like this in place.

I like the first comment on the page:
"I am German and i donīt like this law. Some of the Captain-America-Comics, which were translated here, had the swastika erased in it. i think itīs stupid to shut out all this stuff, because if you donīt point the bad things a finger into their ugly faces, they might be forgotten by some time. and that can not be a good thing."

So, when are you Germans going to have this law overturned? wink

They can wear the left facing swastika if they wish.

The Nazi's did steal their symbology from many sources.

Roman, Occultic...

Swastika origin theories

Anyone that thinks the swastika originated from the Nazis or Buddhism
is under a misapprehension.

I thought the story was that Hitler saw a left-sided Swastika on a Hindu sculpture or picture and took the idea from that.

One theory is that the swastika is an old solar symbol. Relatedly, recent scholarship with ancient Indian and Vedic documents reveals a legend concerning a mythical demonic semi-deity who was obsessed with world conquest and the destruction of subject people/races. His name is difficult to translate from Sanskrit, but it's phonetic rendering into English sounds something like "Putz."
-Mizta Bumpy (HERRBUMPY)

I'll agree with it's demonic origin. I wouldn't call it "mythical." wink

You should have seen the problems the game "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" caused, for those who donīt know the game it was a first person shooter based in the 2nd world war, and there were loads of swastikas, SS stuff, and "you name it" symbols in that game .

It was a crime to even own the game, and ID software had to bring out a version with all the nasty symbols missing, which really spoiled the fun.

Even worse the game Command & conquer didnīt have humans in it, no no. Robots, so every time you drove over some soldiers with a tank, it went "clong clong" instead of squish.
