In short: "Shaw is a mutant capable of absorbing almost any amount of energy -- rechanneling it -- and giving it back tenfold." The absorbing of energy is what enables Sebastian to preform most of his 'Übermensch' feats.

After being pushed out of a ship by Emma Frost, Shaw became significantly more powerful thanks to the kinetic energy he absorbed after hitting the ground:
After being brutalized by Shaw for the majority of the battle, Emma finally wins by projecting an illusion of Shaw killing her into his mind. Doing so gave her the opportunity she needed to gain entrance into his mind, and force him to forget about her.
However, it should be noted that Emma's attempts to telepathically shut down Shaw's mind beforehand were completely ineffectual (as the first and last scans show/state.) That in itself is a ridiculously impressive TP resistance feat on Shaw’s end, considering Emma’s uberness in that area.

Not into posting verbal bashing feats. Thanks though.
It's in there.
It's in there.
Yeah, I realized I forgot to add that in after my 15 minute editing window had expired.
Regardless, it *should* be fairly obvious that it wasn't the real Sebastian (t'was a projection courtesy of Cassandra Nova.) I mean, Shaw usually never sustains physical damage when he absorbs energy- yet he was bloodied up by a few strikes from Colossus in that scene. 1+1=?
...Not to mention he had effortlessly dominated Colossus years earlier. /shrug

Years ago Shaw could be, and was, overloaded (his battle with Magneto is a good example.) However, judging by the plethora of energy he's absorbed since those days, I think it's safe to assume that overloading him has become significanty more difficult- though it still cannot be ruled out as a possibility, given a powerful enough opponent and/or an incompetent writer.
