It's marvels first real all-encompassing event since Secret Invasion. They said it'll be instrumental in changing the marvel universe kinda like Civil War. I think it may have something to do with Dracula's rise to power which has been talked about for a while now.

Well secret invasion was there last event because they said they were going through event fatigue where the writers and fans seemed to be a little tired of the back to back world changing events.

quote: Alsono took over saying "Fear Itself" is "an extinction-level event." "It's a major event that involves everyone--expect major participation from X-Men, from Dracula ... and alliances you wouldn't have expected."
called that, the full article about the event is over at CBR

I think they just wanted to throw in every character who is currently headlining a book a successful book. Wolverine's absence is curious. Marvel is clearly pushing Dracula, which is actually pretty smart, he really hasn't gotten much of a push despite the fact back in the day he was pretty much everywhere with Tomb of Dracula.

Other than House of M Wolverine really hasn't had a role in any of Marvels events in the past decade, so if he isn't in this it would be the status quo.

he has his own family of books now though.
I'm guessing they left out characters that receive the "they're everywhere" complaint since Spiderman and Deadpool are absent too.
