Looks like it was an error. And this is pretty normal for companies to do when you have a balance with them: they will seek to recover the funds from the deceased's estate with legal action notices and letter like from that article.

That's a pretty hefty sum. I don't know how the death and estate laws work in the UK but the husband may still be liable for that balance even if his wife died.

Yeah, I understand all that, but the weird and distressing thing is, the letter was addressed to the deceased woman herself. And the letter talks to her as though she was still alive and ab;e to do something about it.
