Unfortunately I think this kind of sense can only come with age, young crusaders can't see past the mission, and when they grow up they become this writer, or they become Dale from King of the Hill.
But either way it's the young who are the activists, they have the time and the energy for it.

Let them think what they want, let them define you in their narrow little minds while they suppress every last piece of them just to keep a friend that never liked them for themselves in the first place.
It's actually a really good show, Hank's like the most open minded redneck ever.
