Better Luck Tommorow
A group of asian teenagers sitting together in the lunch hall of high school, well dressed, well educated, obviously intelegent. Several of them are on teh honor roll and the head of several extra curicular clubs.... its the last place you'd expect to find hardened criminals, why? Because they exist within the boundries of one of the most infamous american cliches of today, all asians are smart, nice, good citizens who would never hurt a fly. This movie shows how foolish mentality like this is.
The movie is about a group of asian friends, who are all good students, smart, and from the 'rich area' of their town. they are well dressed and belong to several schoolastic clubs. However, this movie studies how wrong some cliches are, and how they eventually get involved in heavy crime. It starts off small, they provide cheat sheets for other students to use for tests, for a price of course, this in turn leads to drugs, and eventually, something worse. It is a wake up call in the same sense that 'kids' was. Both are very similar, showing something that could very well exist within the underbelly of our society, but most people dont recognize or acknowledge. Kids dealed with teh open sexuality of teens of current day, this movie deals with the lack of morals that many teens have these days, and it uses the asian cliche to show just how unexpected it can be.
The movie is more then just a morality tale, it also shows how none of these kids are really "bad". They are just bored, and get into criminal activities because it is exciting and different from what they are used to, and they know because they are overachieving asians, no one will ever be the wiser. They do the acts for fun, because it is better then studying and trying to make it into the best college possible. Boredom in the movie is their main drive for their actions...and its very eye opening.
Better Luck Tommorow is a great allaround movie, great acting, great directing (especially for a first timer) and its very different. This is actually the first movie that really develops the characters past their race, what i mean by that is...many movies involving asian kids never get past the stereotype, they are always good students and nothing more, they dont develop actual personalities for the characters, thus making it hard to distinguish who is who. Better luck tommorow is the first movie where i could easily identify each asian character without any trouble, definately a big plus. Its a movie that shows us how dangerous stereotypes can be, and how in order to fully achieve peace of mind, we have to first understand that the world is not always what it seems
9/10
