Kids
how did the world get like this? This is the question you will be asking yourself after your initial viewing of this movie. It seems just yesterday life was right out of a sitcom, everyone lived behind picket fences, there was always happy endings, the world was a good place. sadly it is not anymore.
No movie shows the real world of today better then kids. now, i was ready to hate kids, because i disliked larry clarks bully, i disliked its style and i thought it was just to pretentious. but, in this movie, that same style that i found very annoying and pointless, is used to make kids very effecting and like the tagline says "a wake up call"
the movie centers around a group of skater punks, who's whole reason for being is sex, drugs, beer and well, more sex drugs and beer. one of these kids (who has aids but is ignorant about it) seems obsessed with deflowering virgin girls, many of which look to be about 13 or 14. now, many people frown upon this and call it perverted and borderline kiddie porn. it does make sense that they think this, however, they are incorrect in this feeling, there is one major difference between this movie and porn, porn exploits sex so the viewer enjoys what they are viewing, this movie does the exact opposite, it totally turns you off. it will make you scared of have sex. it shows it as an almost tragic event, and with the age of the children involved, it should be seen that way.
Alot has been said about the style of this movie, some love it, some hate it. i for one loved it, i dont always, like i stated above, i hated the same style in clarks other movie bully. however, it was used to perfection in 'kids' and really pushes the realism on teh viewer. its like someone opened a window into a group of real life children who's moral values are non existant, and allowed us to watch a day in their life, it would be very easy to confuse this with reality, and for that, it should be aplauded.
kids is one of those movies, that is rated nc 17, to disallow children from seeing it. however, many children would benefit from seeing it, it will teach them a life lesson and show them the consequences of unsafe sex, and make them realize the world is full of horror despair, despite what they're parents may tell them. they need to know this
how did the world get like this? what happened? there is no answer to this question, however, if more people are educated by movies like kids, then maybe we can start to fix it, and eventually change it for the better.... kids is a wake up call, one that should be seen and expereinced by everyone.
