I would say Forbidden Planet is the best sci/fi film ever made. It is based on Shakespeare's The Tempest.

I'm reminded of another poll I saw recently.
Would you rather:
a) receive a cookie and five dollars
b) have your head chopped off
c) have your head chopped off and set on fire
i'll take the cookie and two dollars. I only need two dollars to buy some milk. Thanks, dude, that cookie was fan****intastic.

"Pitch Black", in my humble opinion, is indeed a fantastic Sci Fi movie and Twohy deserves alot of credit for his direction. You can check my reviews as to why I say that. I big part of it has to do with the direction and extremely innovative cinematography.
As for "Chronicles of Riddick". I love the Riddick character, as well the singular franchise. While nominal Sci Fi franchises just wither away in theatres nowadays, it sure was nice seeing epic Science Fiction back on the big screen.
It's a rather under-appreciated movie, much like "Underworld". Unfortunately, it's all because of some ignorant prejudice towards Vin Diesel's acting capabilities.

Twohy has a new film coming out soon that sounds rather good.

Gotta go with The Matrix. I don't remember ever being as blown away coming out of a movie theater as I was after that one. Too bad the sequels sucked...

My all time favorite is "Back to the Future" Without too many battery operated toys the social impact of time travel is highlighted.

All three are great but are three very different types of film.
It does show that great sci-fi can be made.
The only problems with 2001 and Blade Runner to a lesser degree is that they don't play very well to today's younger immediate gratification audiences.
Star Wars was great for reinventing sci-fi when the genre was just about dead. I do think that Empire Strikes Back was a much stronger film in every way. If Jedi had been less of a muppet show it could have been the best of them all.
I skipped a couple of pages so I didn't see if District 9 was mentioned.
And why the hell would anybody think transformers or godzilla were even good much less great?

Nah, Avatar doesn't take the best not even for current Sci Fi movies. District 9 takes that current title since Aliens.
